I did a little toy-shopping. My favorite find was "Buzzing Stunt Magnets" by Play Visions, about $5 per pair -- called "Buzz Magnets", maybe by other brands.

They are supermagnets, probably neodymium, encased in ellipsoids of hematite. Besides all the other magentic fun you can have, when these magnets come together freely, they don't just slap together but repeatedly slap together, making a buzz of rising pitch. If you toss them up to the ceiling, and they join, they are still buzzing by the time they hit the floor.

I found them at Learnng Express. I see them pictured and described here (http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/product/1598), here (http://www.physlink.com/estore/cart/BuzzMagnets.cfm), and here (http://www.stupid.com/stat/BUZM.html) and elsewhere on the Web.

Now I know what to get my playful adult friends. Maybe the kids, too.

Someone had some of those at school, I don't know if it was the exact same thing, but they were super powerful, one got stuck to a chair leg, and it took 2 people pulling to get it off! They were about the size of a silver dollar, and really fun to play with.
