Has anyone seen a Meccano Grand Orrery? constructed one? better yet, got the plans? Some 30+ years ago, Meccano published plans to build a solar system orrery. My son wants to make the most of the cloudy winter nights by building a working model of the solar system.
Any info would me greatly appreciated.
Thanx,
Phill

I was really disappointed a few years ago when I wanted supplement my collection and realised that they'd stopped production:(
It's one of the very few construction systems that has the physical strength to make it useful for prototyping ideas.
I remember a project I was involved in a couple of years ago, where the idea was to retrain finger muscles after surgery, by making a thingie that made you able to control a game by bending two fingers.
Three weeks into the project I made a thingie for exactly that, using meccano, a joystick and some string, so I had something to program to.
It took them another six months to prototype the actual thing:)

These images are served by my own website, and owned by me, so they don't violate the hotlinking rule
It ended up being surprisingly comfortable and allowed me to control the x and y values of the joustick with two fingers.

That's quite the gizmo you built there......meccano is amazing stuff, especially the metal sets from days of yore.
