SUMMARY: High energy electrons are a menace to space travel. They can disrupt satellite electronics and pose a serious threat to the health of astronauts. Over the past 5 years, ESA's Cluster spacecraft have revealed how these electrons are given so much energy by the Earth's magnetosphere. Scientists now know that intense solar storms can cause the magnetosphere to wobble, releasing a flood of high-energy electrons.

the characteristic dimensions of these chorus source regions have been estimated for the first time.

Appears to be an excellent probe into the nature of Van Allen Radiation Belts. Makes me wonder that maybe low frequency artificial transmissions from Earth may also influence our safety zone for satellites vs. solar storms.

Perhaps somewhat off topic, but since the Earth's magentic field protects us from high energy particles, couldn't a localized magnetic field be built to protect astronauts? On a small scale, the field density could conceivable be strong enough to deflect the particles without taking too much energy, I would think.

Has anyone looked at this? Or do the physics/energy requirements/someything else make it impossible?

This may be a little silly question, but what exactly make particles "high energy particles"? Is it simply their high velocity?
And if so, how fast do they have to go relative to us to be defined as "high energy particles"? So fast that they have any significant increase in relativistic mass?

The same technology that would protect astronauts, would modify the spectroscopic signature of re-entry vehicles....warheads....confusing potential interceptors, hence it's all classified.:naughty:

How would a magnetic field alter spectroscopy, radar, or anything else used to track missles?

Sorry about the delayed response...busy. The re-entry shield burns off as the nosecone comes in. To minimize heat transfer to the contents, it ablates...or comes off in layers...kind of like French puff pastry. Burn a stack of newspapers, top down, and the layers ablate...opening up in the middle, and burning to the edges and peeling away.
Lots of debris is created in this...hence John Glenn's remarks about being a real fireball...and fireflies. Heavier payloads require different ablation shields. If you watch them reenter, you can categorize the intensity and spectral signatures. If you're shooting at them (MIRV's) you want to hit the real ones, not the decoys.
An ambient magnetic field on the bottom of the reentry vehicle will alter the ablation debris paths, temperature profiles and hence the spectral signature of the vehicle. They show a piece of one material in the Time-Life books Science Series :SPACE, with a cat sitting on a piece of ablative plastic under which is a blowtorch. The cat is quite comfortable.
Incidently, there never was a space race :liar: , infighting amongst branches of the military at the Pentagon delayed our launches until after Sputnik was already up. We had two ready vehicles first.:naughty:

Is this first hand knowledge? That would be very cool. I own a 1958 book "All about Satellites and Space Ships" from Random House. Here are a few cool quotes:
"The moon will be the first goal." "Scientists are certain that it will be before the year 2000. It may be by 1975. Some think by 1965."

"The first step was taken in 1949 when the U.S. Armed Forces reached an altitude of 250 miles with a two-stage rocket."
"The second step was taken on Oct. 4, 1957, when Soviet Russia..."
"The third step will be the firing of a rocket to the Moon."
I LOVE OLD BOOKS. It was written before the X-15! That's old.

Hi Father. The Americans were ordered not to allow the third stage of a test rocket (Thor or Atlas?) to exceed its 700 miles of altitude, at which point it was going ~1000mph less than orbital velocity. It was ordered to be a dummy stage. Ike was nervous about overflying Russia with something other than U-2's....evidently.Try this: http://www.batnet.com/mfwright/sputnik.html enjoy!:silenced: :shifty:
