Well, about to be gone. Berghoff's is closing at the end of February. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051229/ap_on_re_us/berghoff_closing) Almost worth paying a long distance visit for "ein letzter Prosit!"

At least the building will be used by the family for a catering service, instead of housing yet another Starbucks.

The restaurant's history is intermingled with Chicago's. It was such a downtown staple that after Prohibition ended in December 1933, the city issued The Berghoff Liquor License No. 1.

I used to eat there about once a month, many many moons ago...

and it's not the only long-term merchant to go away - tho the one I'm thinking of is here in Denver...
