"Squirrels have bitten to death a stray dog which was barking at them in a Russian park, local media report."

Apparently, even squirrels have a threshold. :)

Frankly, any rodent smart enough to horde nuts for winter, in direct contrast to a humans general inability to think past tonight, should be considered dangerous.

I think I heard Mayor Bloomberg refer to their tactics as "thuggish"!

A dog who is killed by squirrels will never get into doggie heaven.

When he gets in front of the dog review board, he will fail the laugh test.

So true!

Overboard (http://www.ucomics.com/overboard/) is a comic strip about a squirrel-chasing golden lab... and sometimes a pirate crew is involved too.

Ahhh, I remember that comic. I haven't read it for a long while...

Thanks for the link.

I can see it already....

"Today the president announced that he will be using squirrels as part of the coalition war effort against terrorists."

I call ** on this story.

Squirrels do not normally eat meat. They will, when faced with hunger and no other source of food eat bird eggs, insects or pick at a carcass. There are also reports of male squirrels that attempt to eat infant squirrels. While this is true, it is so rare, it is not mentioned very often.

Squirrels are solitary animals. They do not have a hierarchical structure, and therefore, no group name was established.

I dunno. I've seen footage of some sort of gentle, fluffy domesticated rabbit channeling the vorpal bunny (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_of_Caerbannog) on a cat who'd been picking on it too much. (The cat immediately channeled Brave Brave Sir Robin and ran off to "change it's armor".)

Having lived in Fredericton, NB for three years, it wouldn't surprise me one bit that the squirrels made a grusome example of some yappy dog now and again.

I encountered one squirrel, while I was walking home from work, that certainly had an attitude problem. It was up an oak tree flinging acorns at me. Hit me a couple of times, too. Little varmint.

Hmm... squirrels actually *GANGING UP* to take on a dog would be rather questionable, though.

No matter how you try and rationalize it, I'm still not buying it. The dog would fight back and take out a couple of squirrels and I'm pretty sure the squirrels would run. Also squirrels will not share a food source. We have a food bowl outside the window and there are nuts in it for the squirrels and they will fight when another one wants food.

Definately not true and very far fetched.

Frankly, I think this is most likely a hoax. Squirrels do not function as predatory pack animals. Now, I'm not certain if squirrels would eat carrion or not...it wouldn't be normal for them to do so, but that's more plausible then the original story. Squirrels attacking, killing, and eating a large dog, I just don't think so!

Squirrels are omnivores not herbivores, they'll eat meat when available, they are among the most inventive and flexible animals in their solutions of food hunting and the report does link the incident to a severe food shortage.
I'd be inclined to consider it at least plausible.
