Space.com (and others) have posted pictures and a story about Comet Machholz 1, as seen by the SOHO spacecraft. Indeed, the image is spectacular and Machholz 1 is an intriguing object.

But why is the comet's tail not pointing away from the Sun?

Why do some comets have two tails? (http://itss.raytheon.com/cafe/qadir/q2805.html) by the Space Scientist discusses the make up of the two tails of comets. The dust tail follows the comet, mostly, and the ion tail is pushed directly away from the Sun.
