i merely wnated to say something ive wanted to say for a long time, and aska question, too. Hello, Phillip Plait. me and some of my friends have been "bad" readers for a long time, and some of us have your book. its very exiting to be ably to converse with you(oh, just kill me now, my life is pathetic!!!:)) Also, how would one pronounce your last name?

I assume you're referring to Keeping Up Appearances with Patricia Routledge as Hyacinth Bucket.

Reacher, you may want to edit the title of the thread. BA has got a PhD (http://www.badastronomy.com/info/whois.html), so his title is doctor.

The erudition and range of interests of BABB posters never ceases to impress me! You are, of course, correct.

Yep, bet you never expected to meet a 16-year old firearms fanatic here either. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

I too pronounce it as "plate". I have never heard it before and it is an interesting name none-the-less. -Colt

No, It's not Beeblebrox. It was his analyst. He was (sort of) explaining why Zaphod stole the Heart of Gold. "Beeblebrox is just this guy, ya know?"

Click the "edit" icon - the notepad/paper with pencil picture - it's next to the "quote" icon.

OK, then, to repeat the OP:

Also, how would one pronounce your last name?

The dictionary, as it happenes sometimes, is wrong. It's pronounced "plate". I get it mispronounced a lot, even after I say it correctly. Oh well.

Today's Washington Post mentions a Phil Plait, though not in a scientific context. The Style section looking back on ten years of the "Style Invitational," a fairly silly but frequently entertaining contest page, and mentions noted entries from the past. In the category of "bad advice for visitors to Washington, DC" , the winning entry was "Fun Fact! According to the Guinness Book, the youngest person ever to scale the White House fence unassisted was 8 years old!" The submitter was a Phil Plait, then (May 1996) of Silver Spring, MD.

So does the BA have an avocation? If so, what glorious prize did he win?

Oh my, the past comes to haunt me.

I was a regular contributor to the SI, and got my answers in quite a bit for a while. It was a lot of fun! The problem is, I never wrote that winning entry. They messed up, and credited someone else's entry to me. In the next week's contest they cleared that up. The Czar of the Invitational said he would send me a t-shirt, and never did. I may be scarred for life. I'll email them on Monday and let them know they messed up again. Should be good for some laughs...

...and to my credit, I did once win one of the contests. The contest was to come up with a snappy answer to a stupid question.

Q: Who do you think you are?

A: I think I am Rene Descartes, therefore I am Rene Descartes.
