SUMMARY: ESA's XMM-Newton space telescope has observed the tiny cores of dead stars wrapped up in a nice warm blanket of superheated gas. These "low-mass X-ray binary" are pulling a steady stream of material from a larger companion star, and then whipping it up into a disk.
