SUMMARY: Now firmly in orbit around the Red Planet, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has begun a series of maneuvers through the atmosphere to slow itself down even further. The process is called aerobraking, and each successive pass slows it down a little bit, lowering its orbit. After 6 months of aerobraking, sweeping through the atmosphere 550 times, the spacecraft will be in its final science orbit.
