SUMMARY: The dark patch in this Hubble Space Telescope photograph is a "Bok globule" in the nearby star forming region, NGC 281. Astronomer Bart Bok first came up with the theory that dark globules like this are giant clouds of molecular gas, hundreds of light years across. Once perturbed, parts can collapse and become gravitationally bound; eventually forming stars and planets.
