Finally, your research paper should be 10-12 pages over one of your topics. It should contain a clear thesis statement, a discussion of the problem at hand, what is currently being done to solve the problem, and what should be done. This latter part is your own perspective, not necessarily that of your assigned country.

Sickle Cell Anaemia, well, part of it anyways.
I know that this has been mentioned before, but meh, it's a good example of both a beneficial mutation, and a mutation that is only beneficial based on environment.

If one of your parents has the genetic code to cause sickle-cell anaemia, even if they don't have the disease itself, you'll be immune to malaria. Should both your parents have it you'll probably die.

Naturally, this mutation is incredibly beneficial, if one of your parents has it, malaria is very deadly, and spreads quickly, if you're immune to it you'll be more likely to survive.

However, in areas where there isn't/wasn't any malaria, this was a mutation that was only harmful, it gave no benefit and could cause a deadly disease, as such people who had it didn't live any longer then other people, in fact, they died much faster, so this mutation all but vanished.
A small thing on sickle cell anaemia I was typing out for another forum, I copied it so that I could paste it into WP and edit it there (Accursed Spellbound not being updated!), I wrote it in response to the claim that there are no beneficial mutations in humans.

By the way, this reminds me of a bit I read some time ago on "outside the box" thinking. There is a test question that says:

You are given a barometer. How do you determine the height of a certain building?

The expected answer would be to measure the air pressure on the ground and at the top of the building and calculate from there, but there are some other answers:

Use the barometer as a weight on the end of a strong, non-stretching line. From the roof, lower the barometer to the ground. Mark the length of the line, and measure it.

Drop the barometer from the roof. Determine the time it takes to hit the ground. Given the time and acceleration, calculate the height of the building.

Find a building official and say "I'll give you this nice barometer if you tell me how tall the building is."

First you knock on his door with the barometer. :P

On top of that, you can get it's height in barometers, by placing it on the wall, making a mark, moving it up, etc.

You can also do something with a pendulum, but I can't remember quite what it was.

This would be from a thread I'm participating in at another forum, the basic premise is the person gives you a word, only instead of being in letters, it's in numbers (in this case 96566), they then give you a clue ("Think animal carnival"), and you have to decode what the number is. The catch is, the numbers are numbers from a phone, so 2 can only represent abc etc. So, I guessed that the first two letters were probably WO, and tried all permutations from there, unfortunately they all seem to be nonsense. (No helping me now, I will figure this out!), of course, this approach fails if I allow more then three, there are a total of 324 combinations, and I am not going to list them all :P

Edited to add: Not a warning to anybody on this thread!

12. Politics & Religion

Due to the contentious nature of these subjects, forum participants are strongly advised to avoid discussing religious and political issues. Please don't begin or contribute to a topic that's merely going to incite or fuel a flame war.

However, the following exceptions apply:

A) Political impact upon space programs, exploration, and science.

B) Focused, polite discussion of concepts such as creationism and "intelligent design" which bear direct relevance to astronomy and science, for the purposes of conversing about and addressing misconceptions.

C) Focused, polite discussion of the difference between astronomy (including cosmology) and religion

Partisan political debate is unwelcome and should be undertaken elsewhere. The same applies to debates purely religious in nature. Likewise, proselytizing will not be allowed. In short, you are allowed to discuss politics and religion within a very limited scope where they affect space and space exploration, astronomy, and science. Nothing more. If you really really need to talk about these topics with someone, take it to email or to another bulletin board.

Susan, I have not received the final lab from you.

Without it you will have an 80% average; with it you will be much closer to 90%

I know it is late in the semester to be writing labs, but you have turned them all in and I thought I would offer you a chance.

Keep this in mind; lab is only 20% of your final grade in Physics. With the 80 you will receive 16 points towards your final grade; with a 90 you will receive 18 points. Your final grade in physics will to up 2 points.

So, if you have a solid grade and don't need the 2 points then your grade won't be effected much, but if you need the 2 points you might get that lab to me.

Llama, llama firelight

For my Sweater
Llama wool's better

Llama with brown fleece, llama with tan
Knitting that sweater in llama-land
While I quiver
So cold I shiver

And they sheer and they spin and they knit it
Tryin' it on so I fit it
Soft like the clouds up above
Feels like llama love

Nibbling on grasses, chewing on leaves
Eatin' real good for a healthy fleece and a soft one
It'll be no good
if its course hun

We don't want alpacas
Or guanacos
Llama wool llama, wool it really goes
With my poncho, down here on the rancho

And they sheer and they spin and they knit it
Tryin' it on so I fit it
Soft like the clouds up above
Feels like llama love

Hmm... I was looking at 80% AK-47 receivers.
For those that don't know (probably a lot on this forum) you can buy a "parts kit" of rifles such as an AK-47, where the receiver is cut in half with a plasma torch (usually there is a section missing too, so you can't weld it back together). You can buy a 80% receiver and finish the last 20% of work yourself, or make it all yourself. Don't worry, it's completely legal. You can NEVER transfere (sell) the rifle though. If you did you would be considered a 'manfacturer', and you need to be properly licensed for that.

Man Accused Of Hitting Biker Was Angry Over Traffic

POSTED: 3:37 pm EDT May 30, 2006

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Police say a North Carolina man accused of hitting a motorcyclist in Myrtle Beach and dragging the man's bike for miles may have been upset over traffic.

Larry Jacobs, 67, of Sugar Grove, North Carolina, is being held without bond charged with assault and battery with intent to kill. Makino Robinson, who is a 27-year-old soldier on leave from Fort Bragg, was struck Sunday morning during the Atlantic Beach Bike Fest.

Witnesses said Jacobs changed lanes and struck Robinson's bike from behind. Robinson reportedly struggled not to be pulled under the car.

Myrtle Beach Police Detective Michael Hull says Jacobs was angry over the traffic congestion caused by the festival.

Robinson's sister says the soldier received bruises and road burns from the incident and is resting at his family's Georgetown County home.

Before The Planetary Society stepped in to help, only about 11 years of Pioneer Doppler data had been analyzed, and the Pioneer anomaly remained a mystery. A lot of the remaining data (more than 19 years of it) were stored on old 7- and 9-track magnetic tapes needed to be saved and converted to modern media. By June 2006, scientists and engineers led by Slava Turyshev at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory were able to recover much of the more than 30-year navigational histories of both spacecraft.

noAction | noAppend | else | conditionIndex
1B = 1b + 1b + 1b + 5b

Okay, that means that 0x3f would decode as

else if (condition31()) appendCorner();

This would be something like..

unsigned char *code=codeArray;
unsigned int numCodeBytes=sizeof(code);
bool q=true;
for(int i=0;i<numCodeBytes;i++) {
q&=condition(*code&0x1f);
if (*code&0x80) {
if (*code&0x40) {
appendCorner();
}
else {
q=true;
code=codeArray;
}
}
code++;
}

Ah, something I was going to post on another board, but gave up on and decided I should figure out first.
Well, maybe it will make me look smart.

I've got a bunch of sweet corn that I need to use (it's in season! yay!) I know what I want to accomplish with at least some of it, but I haven't figured out exactly how to do so.

Basically, I want to cook some and take it off the cob, then pack the kernals into balls or patties and bread them with the flour-conrmeal mixture and fry them. So sweet fresh corn breaded and fried in corn bread. Yum. I just can't figure out how I want to get the corn-center to stay together. I have some smoked gouda cheese that I might grate and melt and use as a binder. Cheese, sweet corn, and corn breading sounds good to me. Just don't know if it'll work.

autocad civil 3d 2011

Ah, I was looking for some new software for work purposes. Looks like it could be good, but it was a big enough struggle getting AutoCAD 2010 at work and they still haven't fixed up the installation bugs (they won't let me fix it, and they're bloody hopeless trying to sort it out themselves). I don't think I'll bother trying for this one.
