SUMMARY: Comet 73P/Schwassmann Wachmann 3 is a beautiful sight in the night sky, especially now that it's fractured into many pieces. There's evidence for these kinds of impacts on several planets and moons in the Solar System, and astronomers watched 23 fragments of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 smash into Jupiter in 1993. What if a string of comet fragments like this hit the Earth? There are only a few examples of these kinds of impacts on the Earth; unfortunately, wind, rain and tectonic forces work to hide the evidence.

Crater chains are one of the biggies on "aliens built Iapetus" sites. Since we have a very clear natural mechanism for what is causing them, we should all be disappointed...Hey! Wouldn't it be cool if there really were Alien civilizations doing this kind of thing?

Incidently, this explanation would have been around for decades, if the Zwicky model of the comet would have included a lot more heavy metal and a lot less ice.
