View Full Version : Changing mounts?

I have a 6" newtonian (cheap) that I would like to change mounts for. Right now it has an equatorial mount, and I want mount it with a dobsonian. It came with the equatorial mount. I don't mind the equatorial mount, however, it is wearing out, and I really don't need the precision. I would be just fine with a dobsonian. Anyone foresee any problems making the switch?

You should be able to do this, if you have some basic wood working skills, and some way to cut plywood. There are plans online to make a basic Dob, a search should turn up quite a few. You've already got the tube and the mirrors and focuser mounted, so all you need are the base parts.

The trickiest part may be the altitude bearings. They need to be circular, or at least semi circles. So you need some way to cut circles out of plywood, or get someone to do it for you, or find some somewhere.

In addition to plywood, you'll also want to get a sheet of ebony star formica. And some small squares of teflon.
