View Full Version : Distant Quasars are Natural Particle Accelerators

An international team of astronomers has gathered new data that helps to explain the origins of quasar particle jets. These are enormous jets, hundreds of thousands of light-years long, emanating from the supermassive black holes at the heart of distant galaxies. They're mysterious because the energy of particles they emit goes down across the length of the jet. This new theory proposes that the jets are emitting particles through synchrotron radiation; where the environment close to the black hole acts as a natural particle accelerator.

3C273 is a very interesting object, being the first quasar that was discovered, and IIRC the first quasar to have a host galaxy imaged, and one of the first objects studied with a jet. We're learning a lot about how these jets work, but, as this blog entry shows, we've still got some details to work out.

Another article which also discusses 3C273, jets, and x-rays from synchrotron radiation is:

This is a 19.5 yer old paper on what has since become an ATM topic. BTW, the link to the abstract fails.

Abstract link now fixed. The subject is not ATM, as papers on similar subjects are still published in mainstream journals, and all the astrophysics is based on currently accepted laboratory physics; indeed the news item in question appears to have such "radical" views in common.

i've pointed to the concept that "the energy of particles they emit goes down across the length of the jet" a few times..both on ut and here at baut.

and that this jet might show a mechanism for "intrinsic redshifting"....giving the impression (at any frequency checked) that 3c273 is more distant than it possibly really is.

ie: collecting "optical light" would actually be the collecting of redshifted xray light...and the same for radio, which would be redshifted from optical.

red = vla radio
green = hst optical
blue = rosat xray

Simply that, you should have added a question mark to the title of the post.

If that is not strong evidence that the predominate force is electromagnetic, then whats it going to take to wake the mainstreamers up!!!

I've asked before, what happens to all this accelerated matter? where does it end up?

But still it's a step in the right direction for EU proponets, the evidence mounts!

Check out my avatar, mother natures most effcient way of moving matter around the universe!
