New GY blimp... the "Spirit of innovation" named today.

Now the point of my post:
http://www.newsnet5.com/travelgetaways/9403206/detail.html

In image number 6 "It holds 200 cubic feet of helium and air." Thats huge? :wall:

Also; 2 blimps make a formation? I've heard that on multiple reports this morning. Along with a reporter saying he is surrounded by blimps (2?)

I'd say that you could do a formation with two like line ahead, line abreast, etc. Rather than randomly spread out, say, one blimp pointing N at 150 feet and the other SSE at 75 ft and 3 miles away.

Being "surrounded" by two is pushing it a bit though.

Spirit of Innovation and The Spirit of Peace is a bit bulky as a name, glad they shortened it. :shifty:

200 feet? I don't see that, but it has got to be a typo. That thing is way more than 6 feet across.

They were off by just a bit I believe Goodyear's Anatomy of a Blimp (http://www.goodyearblimp.com/basics/anatomy.html), more friendly page here (http://www.goodyearblimp.com/basics/print_stats.html).

If it's the same class as what's represented on this page, it should have been 200,000 cubic ft.

Edit: Huh makes me wonder, mental lapse or an European journalist that saw the comma as a decimal place rather than indicating thousand incriment.

Alright, I'm not going to mince words here. Ack! That name is awful.

...He said there was no science involved in picking the name -- he just thought of it and sent it in.
Well, it sure sounds that way.

"It's pretty exciting. It's good to see the name on there and for the kids so they'll always know that daddy did the Spirit of Innovation and named it," Harrelson said.
Is this guy for real? Sounds like he just stepped right out of a Frank Capra picture.

What's the the first thing he wants to do with the (yechh!)"Spirit of Innovation"? Fly it over a ball game! That's innovative. I visited a few sites about the Akron area, and in 3 minutes I found ten more interesting places to fly a blimp.

And why doesn't anyone know how to name anything anymore. Those other submissions in the contest were just as creatively vapid. Patriot of Peace?...**Hock! Splat!** Where are the names that convey a sense of history, a sense of personality, a sense of impact?

You got any better suggestions?

You have two things going on here:
1) The judges were leaning toward a "Spirit of..." name since the last few blimps have been following that them ( s.o. Akron; s.o. Goodyear; s.o. America)
2) A local that is trying to find something local to take pride in. Akron isn't famous for much since the big rubber companies left, but they do have an Inventors Hall of Fame. I would be sure that's what was in the back of his mind.

Also; why are you blaming him? Goodyear had 20,000(?) entries to choose from totally. So that either puts the blame on Goodyear, or 20,000 people couldn't think of anything better.

So you think for an entire day that's it? He is showing pride in his school, plus, he wants to show off for his community. I'm sure he's going to be "cruising" the area before the game.

I'm sure he'll end up flying over my house since I'm pretty close... now that's interesting... ok, maybe interesting only for me. (I am usually on the GY flightpath to Cleveland and see them quite a bit)

Well, this is not a new one as in "more". It's only a new one as in "replacement".

But; In the "more" catagory... the Ex-Goodyear airdock will be producing this/these. (http://www.lockheedmartin.com/wms/findPage.do?dsp=fec&ci=14477)

And that will be tonight (http://www.wkyc.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=57117)

I'll be looking for it...Hudson is close enough to my house to see it circling (I think).
