...so why not try it here?

What say the hoi polloi to some sort of informal gathering? Get together for a weekend, quaff some suds, down a dog or two, take our various glass implements out to some dark location and everybody look for Planet X's shattered remnants all at once?

Or maybe we can start with something smaller.

Calling All OH/IN/MI/KY BABBlers...
Is it possible to get together for an evening some time this summer? Say maybe at my club's dark sky site east of Dayton OH?
Check it out here (http://www.mvas.org/archive/brochures/Tri-fold1.pdf)

Now, I'm not committing to anything for anyone (don't have the authority to). But...there's a couple of dinky Mom&Pop motels on 68 between Yellow Springs and Xenia... if I told the high panjandrums there's a half dozen out-of-town stargazers coming in for the weekend and we'd like to gaze our eyeballs out at the JBSPO site...who knows, maybe we could set something up...and there are campsites available at the park, too...hmmm...while I do much checking on things, who out there might be interested in something like that?

That sounds like fun. I can't promise anything, but I am interested. Could we just camp out at the viewing site? Is that one of the things you're checking on?

Keep us posted. Thanks,

I'd have to check the map to see how much of a drive it would be (from Maryland), but I'd certainly consider it. We certainly should have some sort of BABBcon one of these days.

The only problem is that it wopuld be massively expensive for international members to get here. How about a online one? You know have all memebers show up for a special chat event at a certain time?

Or have all members of each major nation get together infront of a webcamera and have chats between them all. Anyone?

Charlie in Dayton

Thumper -- the viewing site itself would be reserved for 'scopes etc, but it's only about 1/2 mile to the other side of the park where the campgrounds are. We could rig some sort of shuttle back and forth, maybe...

g99 -- we do have a dialup connection out there...those of us anywhere with digital cameras could take pix and upload them sorta realtime to some borrowed space out there on the web...and there is the possibility of establishing some sort of IRC chat room for the evening...

This is all still extremely tenuous at this part, seeing as I have the authority to commit the club to absolutely NOTHING...but it's fun to dream...

...gee...I'm starting to understand how Maira felt over on the JREF board...one small suggestion, and the whole world chimed in...

Sounds like fun. :) No cameras at the school where I work, but I'd be up for the chat room.

Hey Charlie:

Are you a member of the MVAS? I'm not but I go to the Apollo Rendezvous every year. I also bring my scope to local star gazes put on by the MVAS. I wonder if we've met. I've been to JBSPO for a few of the Friday gazes and the AR gazes. I only know people by thier scopes, what type do you have?

If you do decide to have a BABBin at JBSPO I would certainly like to attend, assuming no previous commitments.

To all others out there: John Brown State Park Observatory is the "Dark Sky" location for the Miami Valley Astronomical Society, located in Dayton, OH. The park is about 20 miles east of Dayton. It is a very nice facility with several "club scopes", plenty of electrical outlets to plug in your own scope and best of all, in door plumbing! It would be a good place to have a BABBin. :D

Charlie, let us know if you can/want to arrange something.[/list]

Okay...
With permission of the sponsoring group to put the word out as an unofficial activity...
And with the hope that I'm not stepping on any BABB administrative toes here...

The 33rd annual Apollo Rendezvous and Telescope Fair!!

Main announcement flyer (http://www.mvas.org/rendezvous.html)

Main flyer in Adobe .pdf format (http://www.mvas.org/archive/ar/2003/ar2003.pdf)

The Apollo Rendezvous 2003 will be held at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, 2600 Deweese Pkwy., Dayton OH
45414 (http://MapsOnUs.switchboard.com/bin/maps-map/usr=~new/mapCentScale=-84.20336,39.78843,0.40?SelectItems=-&AddMapLabel=-84.20336%2c39.78843%2c2600+Deweese+Pky&SessionSrc=SendMail.m)

Following Saturday's activities, the John Bryan State Park Observatory (http://www.mvas.org/facilities.html) will be open for observing and a cookout
(weather permitting). Bring your own groceries, but the grills and charcoal will be provided. JBSPO is located about 25 minutes east of the museum and maps will be available at the museum or at this link JB Map in Adobe .pdf (http://www.mvas.org/archive/jbspo/jb-map.pdf)

There is much more at the first link above (vendors, door prizes, the astrophotography contest, multiple stargazes weather permitting). Please check it out!

Why is this here? Well, this thread started out as a feeler for an unofficial BABB-O-Con, and the Rendezvous sounded like a natural. Please note that all BABB-related activities will be strictly informal (and if ya wanna come to the barbecue, the guys say it'd be a real good idea to have a ticket to the show...).

It's gonna be a 'hail fellow well met' kinda thing...

So...what's the world think? Yesnomaybe possibleperhaps?

Well, im in Oz, so im not going to be able to make it to a BABBlers get together, if you're still going ahead with it, but I am coming to the U.S. next year, so how about making it an anuall thing?

Hey, that was all one sentence.

I think that regional get-togethers are a great idea, and as soon as there's one in Texas, I'm up for it. But Ohio's kinda far and snaky, if you get my drift.

ohio is too far for me, anywhere in Flroida or possibly South Georgia (Atlanta?) permit a weekend trip.

Hey we can all go to and meet at Kenedy space center!! huh? anyone? anyone?

We can get a tour of the place and each take picturtes of each other pretending to fake the moon landing with the lander they have there. :-)

i dunno if i will come next year(if it happens next year, and im able to be in the country, which depends on my uncle). im decidedly... young. i feel out of my league as it is here, for example, i have no idea what dark matter is, and half the conversations seem to be about it, so the fact that ur all older than me (even you, colt! :-? ) would be a little unnerving. i would be in on the chat thing though, 4 sure.

I wonder how Colt feels about it.

don't mind me, im just having a whinge... perhaps i have been around my sister too long...

by the way, Daro, the reason you dont know about this america thing is cos i keep forgeting, as next year is ages off, and by the look of things right now, it prolly wont happen.

As said before, this is all terribly unofficial. No life-point penalties will be enforced if you can't show...If you can, bring your scope, sleeping bag, soda pop, and some hot dogs for the Saddy nite flesh roast!

No one should feel threatened by the possible levels of discussion at a meet like this. If we do it out at JB, we'll be so busy scarfing meat byproducts and staring thru all the scopes that there won't be time to get real philosophical. Besides, I expect it'll be the standard selection of conversational topics out there...what's the best local microbrewery, full Detroit lockers vs limited slip, BB Chebbies vs BB Fords, politics, beer, religion, beer, soda, pretzels, and beer...things like that.

Hey, if ya can make it, c'mon out! If ya can't, we promise to make you part of it by telling some semblance of an embarrassing story with you as the punch line! :-?

They are different types of differentials on 4X4 off road vehicles. Detroit lockers are a variation on "all wheel drive" where all wheels are powered at all times. Limited siip is a differential that puts power to the wheels that are getting the most traction. :D I hope this helps.

I'll be easy to spot, wandering around the event wearing either my semi-official MVAS hat with my name and ham radio call sign on it, or my dusty orange-with-royal-blue-letters semi-unofficial BABB hat with my screen name on it...

Okay, I've done darn near everything but come pick ya up...it's your turn...c'mon out and let's spin some tall tales about Phil...

Just a bump to keep in up top.

The Apollo Rendezvous is next week, Fri 13 Jun and Sat 14 Jun, with the 20" scope at the Rendezvous site open for public viewing Friday nite if it's clear (I'll be part of the scope squad) and a big stargaze and BYOG weenie roast at the JBSPO dark sky site outside of Yellow Springs on Saturday nite. Camping at the site for that night only is permitted.
