Has anyone done a review of the Movie Pitch Black? The scene with the eclipse looks really cool but I have a feeling it is not accurate from an astronomy point of view.

jokergirl brought it up last December (http://www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=46274#46274), I found the thread by searching for both pitch and black, although that does bring up a few other posts.

I brought up references to the sequel that's due out at sometime soon.... but I can't remember the thread

No need to remember, just use the search feature for posts by Tito_Muerte, and containing both pitch and black and viola!, This'll undoubtedly fuel the PX fire in May... (http://www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=71531#71531), music to our ears.

A sequel to "Pitch Black?" Remember when a movie had to be really, really good and/or really, really profitable to justify a sequel? They seem to plan the sequels now when they make the original and it doesn't matter how the original plays. Do I sound like a fogie? More of a geezer? Sorry.

No it's fine. It's actually got less to do with the movie, than it does with Vin Diesal....you see when the first pitch black came out it grossed a whopping 43 million (which is less than anger management made in its opening weekend).... however, considering the production budget of the original pitch black was a measly 22 million (which is now less than Vin Diesal's current asking price/per movie)......

Anyway, now with Vin Diesal possessing more drawing power..... it's hoped that the Pitch Black sequal ("Riddick") will be more profitable... (And I think Vin Diesal may have written the screen play too  )

oh, as a final note:

Vin Diesal is co-producing, not co writing as a mentioned above. However, there still may be some major Bad Astronomy potential in the film....it has three writers...who's combined credits are responsible for such classics as :

"Lost in Space" (the newer version)
"I, Robot" (not yet out)
"The Scorpian King"
"Pitch Black"
"The Arrival" (alien invasion movie with Charlie Sheen)
"Waterworld"....
...and the final consumation....
"Critters 2: The Main course"

.............. ..............

O.K. with a list of credits like those, I rest my case.
And I just don't get Vin Diesel. I'm sure it's his real name. I'm sure he has some as yet undiscovered talent. I guess I just don't recognize "star quality" when I see it. See??? Astronomical reference!! "Star quality!!"

Don't worry they are making a Fast and the Furious 2 also. :-)

If Vin Desil wins anything in the MTV Video awards i have lost all faith in the teenage generation. :-)

Lets just hope he doesn't become the next Bond and remake Moonraker. (see space related!)

ironically enough that's not his real name...and the majority of his "Talent" was earlier on before he was famous.

His real name is Michael Vincent...he wrote and directed some shorts and performs music and stuff....and when he was a lot younger I believe he did brake dancing things.

Check out www.imdb.com if you want more info.....

(and for the record, NO, I am NOT a vin diesal fan)

Actually, I thought The Arrival had pretty impressive science in it, as Alien Invasion movies go. Twohy may go slightly weak on some details in Pitch Black in his attempt to shoehorn in the cool idea, but The Arrival is great.
