Secret Documents Rewrite the Discovery of Neptune (http://skyandtelescope.com/news/current/article_932_1.asp)

John Couch Adams seems to have gotten more credit than he deserved - so who says the Establishment can't keep secrets? ;)

It is surprising that no mention is made of Dennis Rawlins' work on this subject. See:

"The Neptune Conspiracy: British Astronomy's Post-Discovery Discovery," Dio, 2, 115 (1992),

and

"The `Theft' of the Neptune Papers, or: Does the Astronomer Royal Merit an Amnesty?" Dio, 4, 92 (1994).

From a study I followed, Adams approached a skeptical Greenwich (There could be no more planets, only Uranus could be extra, according to the Bible) with his initial calculations and they told him they would search there, but didn't, instead telling him a few days later that "We looked, but no planet".

So Adams tried again and again, deliberately misled that his original calculation was in error. Only when Neptune was discovered did Greenwich actually look where Adams told them to.

Has there been any followup to this, in S&T?

It's interesting, why didn't Eggen destroy the files or reveal them? Amazing how the politics of egos interferes with science.
