Hi folks, I'm going to be upgrading the forum software on Sunday, September 24 after 10:00pm PDT. The forum will probably be down for about an hour while I do the upgrade.

Best wishes for a smooth upgrade.

May we expect some new features?

There aren't many. Some minor improvements on some features we're not really using.

Okay, we're upgraded. As always. Let me know what breaks.

Was this Service Pack 478?

Meanwhile, WTG re a quick upgrade! Fraser, there must be a high-paying place for you in an IT department somewhere, as long as you have the proper amount of paranoia and megalomania!

I think it was coincident: the 3 top-page logos went missing. I get red X's for the Bad Astronomy, BAUT, and Universe Today logos.

Even in a separate browser page, entering an address such as this yields 404 failure:

http://www.bautforum.com/images/misc/bautlogo.jpg

And I notice, as I write, that 11 of the 15 smilies to my right, in the reply editor (I forget the level name; it's the moderate one; not simple, not super-WYSIWYG) are missing. 4 of them display fine. For instance, in a separate browser I get a 404 for

I've been getting the same issue, and it's not always 4, or the same ones. I've also been getting the red-x randomly on the smilies in the threads.

As a side note, I never had the smilies appear to the right of my entry box. Must be some sort of default or new setting. Since I like it, I'm not going to look it up.

Yah, the top-of-the-page images are missing. I see text links instead.

I'm having no such problems; I see the logos, those links work, and I see all the smilies. I'm also using the middle editor.

I'm using IE, if that makes a difference.

Me too (6.0 sp2) so that doesn't sound like it.

Maybe it's geographic location (If I remember right, you are at least a half mile from me) :D

I'm in Stow now (at least for work) so it might be 20. Yep, the internet works much better in the sunny south.

I have notice that some people's avatars are missing, externally linked ones like mine still work though.

This is how the post reply page renders in Firefox

At first I thought my Firefox had been corrupted, but IE looked kind of similar.

Yep I'm getting that in Firefox too, missing smilies & avatars.

Fraser

Okay, I got the top logos going. But I do see all the avatars. Can someone give me an example of a link to an image that's broken for them?

Fraser

Okay, I found the smilies.

Fraser

And the avatars. Okay... we're good.

For quite some time - I think it started after a previous upgrade - intermitenty I lose avatars and other graphics. Usually a refresh will clear it up. My guess was that it might be happening under heavy load.

3 mins from asking for examples to fixing two problems. You would have a career in IT ;)

I actually took about an hour to do the upgrade. I did a really thorough job this time, cleaning out the directories fully before installing all the new version. That's why we lost some of our custom graphics. I just brought them back from my backup.

The irony is that the only way you can afford to run a popular website/forum is to become a UNIX administrator. We need a dedicated server to handle the bandwidth, but we can't afford what it would cost for a server administrator. Phil and I are fairly technical, so we can make do, but I wonder what other popular sites do.

I'd be happy to offer assistance in the future should any issues arise. I have quite a thorough working knowledge of vB, and do a lot of professional freelance work on vB sites (skinning, technical support and the like). My site in my sig is vB-based, for instance.

I cannot access my thread list in the profile section, only my posts. And not just on my ancient browser either! Wanna see my thread list...:(

The funny thing is, I can see both the lists of your posts and the threads you have started.

Panic is back again! I cannot see my thread list, only a repeating search form that does not work. Upgrades go against the universal law of not fixing something that works:(

We've lost the "Spam Kill" logo that only the moderators have (I just have a text link), but apparently that hasn't worked for a while, anyway.
