How bout Chillin' Aint Easy (http://www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=1394). If you don't remember who he was, his first posts were in the middle of a heated debate in a Science vs Religion thread in Against The Mainstream. He seemed to want to try and cool things down with some humor and pretty much got slammed by a few of the posters. :(

He only posted 7 times and then disappeared.

The reason I mentioned him was because after the thread got locked I felt really bad that nobody really welcomed him to the board as we would normally do. He kinda arrived at the wrong place and at the wrong time I guess. :(

Handsome is as handsome does. Drab it may be, but it is still the benchmark against which all other currencies are measured.

David Hall

I prefer to think of American bills as "distinguished". We don't go in for a lot of flashy color or whatnot, just simple monotonal elegance, though it was a lot better before the new styles started coming out.

Back before the change there was a Nova special about redesigning American currency with new anti-counterfeit measures and they came up with a conceptual design for a redesigned $100 bill in it. I thought it looked a lot better than the one that the US treasury ended up releasing.

Actually just recently they added a faint blue background to one of the big bills. Can't remeber which, but there was alot of hooplah about it in the press.

Yup! i'm Back! you can now all breath a sigh of relief and start bowing to me again. :-) Only a few more to go till the upheval of forces in the BABB becomes a reality......

Now for a explanation: I left on Sunday for a few days and got back today. My roomate was getting married and i went to hang out at my grilfreinds parents place in Longwood, FL. I also went to KSC and got some great pics of the Saturn V and moon stuff. Plus i met a Apollo 7 astronaut (Walt Cunningham).

I'll be off and on for the next few weeks. On July 19th i am going for a week to the Bahamas to go SCUBA diving with my brother.

I apreciate people missing me. :-)

P.S. about the counselor: I was a camp counselor for a few summers. ONe in Georgia and the other in California. Two months each.

P.P.S. Hi!

A life other than BABB? Ha! thats a funny one. :-)

Actually i am on summer vacation. So i get to sleep in late, stay uop very late and i see my girlfreind for dinner and a bit after.

The reply might not be 30 seconds, but usually withing the hour excapt at times when i have listed above.

during the day if i am not playing games i am on here checking ocasionally.

BigJim said he was going on holiday. He should be back soon.

I'M BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello, everybody! I've just returned from a most amazing adventure. Maybe I'll discuss it in the new "BABB community" forum. What's the story with that? What's been going on? What is with the new emoticons? I picked up Failure Is Not An Option. Looks promising. I also read The Inflationary Universe by Guth during my trip. A decent, although not exceptional, read.

I simply must tell you about my experiences. Most interestring. I learned a lot there, particularly about argumentative tactics. There were no hoaxists there ( =D> ) but there were a few people who had absolutely no clue what they were talking about in some scientific and physical areas. I found that the best tactics are to simply listen to the person and then ask where they got the data. If it sounds like a load nonsense and they "can't remember" then it most likely is nonsense. The person in particular who I was talking with was trying to convince me.... well, it's hard to explain since I couldn't really understand his argument. Something having to do with alpha and beta particles not being radiation because they have mass, and he was also saying that nuclear reactors only release heat in the form of gamma rays. Pure nonsense. I found that if you just keep quiet and make the other person feel intelligent, you can find a bunch of nonsense to debunk rather quickly. I then used the, "Do you know what the $@#% you are talking about?" tactic. (Do you know what fuel rods are? Do you know what a moderator does in a reactor? Do you even know what fuels a reactor?)

Anyway, I've had a most interesting time. I will be here this week, but then at the end of the week I will be going away for another three weeks.

I, myself, come around a lot, but I do not have a lot of time for replying. Much of my time is spent reading the interesting stuff the rest of you write. Somebody around here needs to be an avid reader of your stuff.

Now that's pretty neat. I suspect that we'll be hearing from him soon then.

no one has said much though, so maybe that is a good thing. no one noticing=no one worrying! then again it could mean no one cares...or i'm just not outspoken enough or something. oh well.

guess more than anything i'm just vouching for all those who don't show up for several days or more that maybe something else is really really busy in their lives and hopefully they'll be back before too long.

I miss JS Princeton. Very, very, very much. He knew his astrophysics and cosmology (etc., etc., etc.). Of course, he became disgruntled at some of the posts of some of the other members. However, it was understandable, as far as I am concerned.

I can understand that it is very difficult to keep one's temper when faced with some of the "interesting" posts which seem to be out of the range of science.

Anyway, I miss his posts very, very much, because he knew his science backwards and forwards and I learn a lot from that kind of post.

Me. No, I won't really be "missing" in the true sense, with BABBling closed I didn't know where else to post this. You guys (and gals) have been fun but there comes a time when one has to adjust to cards that are dealt. We've decided to take in an elderly relative and being the "all or nothing" person I am, I wouldn't be satisfied entering discussions I wouldn't have the time to participate in. Fluff posts (besides the occasional joke or bad pun) ain't my style. 8)

I've endeavored to combat misperceptions as best I could and feel I've done that. I had a lot of company and would like extend kudos to people like R.A.F., Sammy, freddo, Musashi and others too numerous to mention for making making it easier and more fun in the process. I also want to thank A.DIM for the articulate defense of his alternative views which, coupled with my skeptical nature, gave the reader something to think about on both sides of the issue. We might've clashed A.DIM, and though we might take different paths, our motivations are the same... the truth. If I'm wrong about UFOs (perish the thought!) I hope you do get to fly one!. Stuart, your military-related knowledge is without question the best on this board and, as this is a hobby of mine, I would have been content reading your posts alone. I wish you well. I consider you and all members of our armed forces, past and present to be the true warriors and heroes. Wolf, your pics made my days (and nights). Humphrey, wish you & your better-half the best marriage possible. You'll love it, trust me. Dgruss23, I think I'll miss you most of all on this board. I'll be saying "Remain Calm" when I'm in the old folks home! I also want to thank those I haven't mentioned by name. I've learned alot reading the posts here. Special thanks go to Dr Plait for having me aboard and for putting up with me & my Irish temper which, at times, bordered on, if not exceeded, his FAQ. This IS the place to go to find out about good astronomy!

My email address is Shj17@aol.com and everyone here is welcome to drop me a line. Take care .. Steve aka Archer17

Archer, I have read here much more and much longer than I have posted. Your post have been thoughtful and worth reading. You are right, this is the place to go to learn about good astronomy and there are good people here to learn it from.

It is posters like you who take the time to explain things and lay out the evidence that make it a good place.

You are also right in that we are lucky to have someone like Dr. Plait who is patient but firm in how he runs this board.

Even if he does have difficulty with compliments!! [-(

I will be away for the weekend (starting tomorrow), so don't be surprised when I don't cover Friday's Mars Rover press conference.

Hellloooo. I'm back.

Sorry, it started with 1,100 flu shots to administer in 2 months. Then the news media reminded folks that flu kills healthy kids on occasion. That led to lots of travel and extra scheduling to get to all the desperate folks who called for shots.

Then came.....Christmas, backed up paper work, a big new contract as infection control consultant for a small hospital (yeah for getting consultant wages in what would have been a regular nurse job), a school crisis, taxes ........... and the biggest hurdle, getting time on the net that wasn't being consumed by my 14 year old.

I had to break through the wall of "you are allowed time for yourself". I can't stay right now, the Sun is coming out. But I'll be back this evening.

Hellloooo. I'm back.

What a relief!!!! Welcome back. Would you believe I actually googled papers in your neck of the woods looking for any mentions of injuries (or worse) for female physicians? (I know, I've gotta get a life.)
Humphrey even attempted to lure you back with deliberately ridiculous creationist threads. We'll all sleep easier tonight.

I'm so sorry I didn't let anyone know what was up. I really was busy night and day in Oct/Nov. By Dec it seemed silly to log on just to say I was too busy to stay.

BTW, I am an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, not an MD.

But I must say a bit more because I'm glad you thought I was an MD, but I'm sorry NPs don't rank the same. While some confuse NPs as being less than doctor level, it varies.

I like to think I am an expert in my field. And, because I specialize in infectious disease, I am sometimes called on by docs as their consultant. Not that I have the knowledge it takes to be an MD. But MDs don't have the knowledge it takes to do what I do either.

And, I do diagnose and treat including prescribe meds. But I think docs pay more attention to treatments and NPs pay more attention to the patient. I call the difference The Nursing Model vs The Medical Model. Sometimes one works better than the other, sometimes folks need both.

There is a fair amount of overlap in the two fields. And, skills vary. There are crummy docs and great NPs and vice versa.

Oh this sounds so stuffy. :P
