View Full Version : Quibble: "Fact based" not "Facts based"

OK, forgive me up front, this is a quibble.

The tag line for Astronomy Cast appears to be "A weekly facts-based podcast...."

I think the use of "facts" instead of "fact" is awkward. It would sound much better to say "A weekly fact-based podcast..."

In fact in Slackerpedia Galactica episode two Travis describes Astronomy Cast thusly.

My 2 cents.

Hi Andy,

I agree it would sound better. But can I be the pedant's pedant and point out that the podcast is in fact (pun intended) based on several "facts" and not just the one? So a "facts-based podcast" is gramatically correct.

I know, I should get out more.

By the way, love your site! I bet your kids cried when the swing had to go?

Hum,
No,
i have Starry Night (http://www.telescopeplanet.co.uk/ProductListing.asp?cat_name=PC%20Software%20--%20Software&cat_code=30&subcat_code=142) - it works, but i never use it.
i use the free versions of Distant suns (http://www.distantsuns.dk/) and Cartes du Ciel (http://www.stargazing.net/astropc/),

However, for youself, i would probably recommend starting off with the free WinStars 2 (http://www.winstars.net/english/), just for its simpler and nicer looking interface

Thank you so much!!

I downloaded WinStar2. hehehe I figured I'd stop in and thank you while we took a break to eat and then get back to playing.

We've found that Saturn (Megan's all-time fav. planet) is going to be in Leo tonight about 10:00, almost strait up from Regulus. Hopefully we'll be able to see it.

Mrs. B,

Hi Andy,

I agree it would sound better. But can I be the pedant's pedant and point out that the podcast is in fact (pun intended) based on several "facts" and not just the one? So a "facts-based podcast" is gramatically correct.

First, I apologize for not responding sooner. I thought my original post was a comment long passed.

You have an interesting point on the quantity of the facts. However, I think it is an group versus individual element situation. Where, in the aggregate, we talk about facts, each element presented is based on a fact.

On the other hand, we speak of the criteria (plural) for making a decision but rarely mention each criterion (singular). That would back your perspective.

At any rate, I still feel that "fact-based" sounds better than "facts-based." If often sounds as if they are saying "faxed-based" which is, of course, absurd.

Thanks for the kind words about my site. I really appreciate it.

And at the time we built the observatory, we had only one child, and she agreed to the change. There is another on they way, so don't tell them :D when he or she arrives!

Starry Night is a very nice application. Great planetarium functions and great graphics. It is good for browsing the sky.
