An interesting podcast. What I found most shocking was Professor Pamela Gay's estimates of anywhere from one hundred thousand to one hundred million civilizations in our galaxy.

When I wrote a tutorial on the Drake Equation, at http://www.astrodigital.org/astronomy/drake_equation.html , one of the things I did was to assign my own values to the parameters. Imagine my amazement when my bottom line number came back as 1.13. Note that my tutorial includes both Excel and OpenOffice Calc spreadsheets that people can download and play with for themselves.

I think the moral of this story, or equation, is that anyone can assign reasonable numbers to the parameters and come up with wildly different answers.
