A speed boost and good science. What more could one ask?

Of course! A successful trip!

Will there be anything else along the path, or will the path to Pluto be (mostly) featureless?

Mostly featureless.

They say they'll hibernate the craft and power cycle instruments once in a while to make sure they're still in good working order.

They'll also be doing a couple of deep space manoeuvres to adjust course.

The Astronomical society that I am a member of held a sidewalk event recently, one of the guys gave a brief opening presentation.
When he got to the part "there are eight planets in our solar system"
It was the first time I had heard it "vocalized" I had to stop myself saying
OH no there is'nt........call me a sentimentalist
