Using automated telescopes (http://www.pparc.ac.uk/Nw/Press/wasp.asp)

Amazingly, they only seem to be using a telephoto camera lens with CCD sensors (http://www.superwasp.org/technical.html) for the search. The aperture is a mere 11 cm, a little over 4 inches.

Hmmm ... so it looks like WASP is designed to look for stellar occultations events that may (or may not) be caused by epistellar jovians like 51 Pegasi b, and then report their existence so that we'll know which stars are candidates to point our real planetary-detection gear at.
