The owner of a local classic car dealership is selling off one of the Sputnik satellites. The going price is $39,000 shipped anywhere.

Off course, I'm a bit partial to the Ford GT40 instead...

Are you sure it's for real, that it's (a) not a hoax, like the eBay Sputnik, and (b) it's a real Sputnik?

Space historians estimate that Moscow produced four backup Sputniks in 1957, although the number of museums and collectors thinking they hold a true original Sputnik is far greater.

I have no idea. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel claims it has been authenticated, and it was displayed in the EAA Museum in Oskosh, Wisconsin, for awhile.

Still, the guys story that his "friend at NASA" got him the Sputnik (plus a second one, still in the package) sound suspicious. It's probably an advertising ploy.

What would NASA be doing with the sputnik anyway? If he said he had a friend in the Russian space agency it would have sounded much more realistic

The new one is "under $150,000", p.79 of Wired Magazine's June issue.
"Ford has announced more details about its upcoming supercar based on the Ford GT40 concept shown at last January's North American International Auto Show..."
