This one shows how big the Martian volcanoes are compared to the United States!

Wow, great pics! It really helps give you a sense of scale. I mean, Olympus is bigger than Illinois! Have any of you ever driven across Illinois? It goes on forever!

Wow awesome pics, thanks! The three volcanoes in the center of the picture (I do not know their names) appear to me to have possibly been formed by the same sort of moving hot spots due to tectonic plate activity that formed the Hawaiian Islands. I have heard/read some discussions of possible tectonic plate activity on Mars in the past. What is the current thinking in this matter?

I think the jury is still out on whether Mars ever had tectonic plates that moved. If it did, it is not immediately obvious from orbit. We need to send some geologists to Mars!

One reason why Olympus Mons is so huge, compared to, say, Mauna Loa or Mauna Kea, is that presumably the hot spot stayed in one place on Mars. The Hawaiian island chain, and the chain of Emperer seamounts off to the NW, indicate a conveyor belt sort of thing that continues to move the extruded material off to the NW and eventually to subduction under Kamchatka.
