The first link listed takes you to SSU's physics and astronomy department. I'm in there someplace. Another good one would be the SSU GLAST webpage (http://www-glast.sonoma.edu), which is the project on which I am currently working.

The phenomenon called "the old moon in the young moon's arms (http://www.rog.nmm.ac.uk/leaflets/solar_system/Moon.html)" is due to earthshine. The sunlight reflected from the Earth illuminates the night side of the moon. However, none of the Apollo missions were on the night side of the moon--"days" last for a month up there, it's daylight for two weeks.

I'm pretty sure that is wrong. I looked into that in one of my posts to that thread (http://www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?topic=511&forum=3&start=0#20020227). It seems that the Apollo missions landed in sunlight, in areas that would be sunlit for almost the full two weeks--in other words, at the leading edge of sunlight.

What do you mean by over the horizon? That the moon was still just above the earth horizon? Where? at the launch site?

The moon is always visible from some part of the earth.

And the Earth stays essentially in the same place in the lunar sky, neither setting or rising, from the point of view of the Apollo landing sites.

Well, judging only from this quote, which I will assume is verbatim from the book, it doesn't seem to be saying they were still in darkness. Admittedly the wording is confusing, but I think the part "with the Sun low over the Eastern horizon " indicates that the sun was in the sky just above the horizon.

In my opinion,I think it was trying to paint an image of the Sea of Tranquility here. Perhaps much of the area was still in shadow and it still seemed a bit twilightish. Or maybe it was a just a typo, and they really meant to say "just after dawn".

Does anyone have this book to confirm the quote or see what it's saying in context?

On another point, I tried putting the Apollo 11 landing coordinates in my new Starry Night software and swinging back to 1969. The time and place given was in sunlight according to the software, although admittedly it wasn't very detailed on exactly where the terminator was. But running a bit to the east put me in darkness, as did running back in time a bit, so it looked to be just after the dawn.

(Addendum): Running it back, the program put sunrise at almost exactly 24 hours before touchdown. Moving away from the sun put the terminator somewhere about 12 degrees further west at the landing time. That is, unless I screwed everything up.

Is that lunar east?

As near as I can tell, all apollo landings were at sites just after lunar dawn. The site would be relatively cool, lots of shadow relief, and it would continue to be in sunlight for a week or more.

Sorry, my mistake, I meant to say west. Like I said, the terminator seemed to be about 12 degrees west of the landing site, at least according to this program.

Sorry to hear that. I think the evidence for duping is pretty tenuous, and it doesn't seem to have been night at the landing site, regardless of what that text might say.
