Its the time of year when a lot of people are taking vacations. I thought that since these people may appear to go "missing" while they're away that I'd start a thread for those that want to let everybody know that they'll be out of contact for a while. That way everybody can remain calm and not have to send out posse's via the missing posters thread.

So anyway, I'm going to be gone for an indeterminate amount of time. First a vacation, then a week of training. After that I've got a project to complete, 4 nights of teaching high school students at the local public observatory's summer institute, and an all night public observing at a 24 hour fundraiser for cancer research.

So I definitely will be out of contact for 2 weeks and maybe another week or two depending on how fast the project goes.

But don't worry - "I'll be back!" 8) In the meantime, everybody make sure to Remain Calm.

Nomally when I am on vacation from work, I stay home, get bored and spend a lot of time on my computer.

So if you see an influx of posts from me, you know I am on vacation. :D

I ended up with added "stay at home" vacation time myself .. already getting over shoulder surgery, I was back at work a couple days and I fell out of a tree!! Hey, don't worry. Compared to the rest of us, you're probably the least insane. But that's not saying much...

Anyway, if you'll excuse me, I have to go try to convince Napolean and Alexander the Great to stop fighting over Cyprus...

My next hop is to have a chat with Some guy names Dr. Evil. He wants some advice in taking over the world. It seems that he has problems with those pesky evildooers.

By the way for those of you with Evil minds and plans on taking over the world: Evil Genius (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/evilgenius/index.html). :-)

I had a similar incident. At the beginning of the year, I had a large influx of posts because I had Knee surgery and was home for a better part of 3 months.

Well, you know one person's vacation is another person's nightmare, but I spent 10 days drinking good Canadian beer, sitting under waterfalls, reading trashy books, and looking at the night sky--a very dark night sky. On Wednesday I had a great night at the scope, cruising around Lyra. Found Gamma Lyrae first (beautiful blue and yellow double) and we decided to look for the ring, hoping for the best because the moon was quite bright and I hadn't found anything as faint (9.5) as the Ring yet. And found it almost immediately. One of those moments you own a telecope for ("Wait!! What's this??? Omigod that's it!! You guys look!!! It's the Ring!!!) All and all a most satisfying vacation.

Humphrey

About ten min out of town it gets prety dark, but not even near to the darkness as you describe.

I don't drink beer. It's not that I don't like it. It's just that I've lost two relatives to alcoholism and two more who are recovering alcoholics. Personally, I can take it or leave it. When I take it, I prefer whiskey. :o

gethen
2003-Jul-14, 04:05 AM
Yeah, that's really sad. I have a couple of siblings who have struggled for years to overcome alcoholism, and I am pretty cautious about overindulging. I guess I like beer, at least in part, because I enjoy brewing it.

The Supreme Canuck
2003-Jul-14, 04:08 AM
I'm sorry to hear that. :(

Personally I think that alcohol is only good to drink on special occasions. Like the May 2-4 weekend. Other than that, I usually don't drink. And I don't like whiskey that much... vodka is better.

Musashi

That is true, reminds me of 28 Days Later, anyone else seen it?

Yah, i saw it saturday. Freaky movie. Really freaky.

I did have one problem with it. no spoilers siince yopu know this at the begining of the movie.

If the virus seffects someone in 20 seconds, how does it spread that fast? There is no way it would of spread to the entire island in 28 days.

First of all the infected are easily seperated from the uninfected. So one shot to the head and byby infected.

Secondly, unless they are finding food and water, there is no way they will last two months. They will last 4 days tops. Then the stopping of the spreading of the virus.

Car and plane travel is non existant since the infected seemingly loose all brainpower.

Plus runing all the way is stupid because their bodies still run the same way we do. Their heart will give out half way to scotland or the buildup of lactic acid will damage their muscles.

One thing i never understood is why don't the infected attack eachother? Do they give off pheramones that stop them from attacking one another? If so why not cover yourself in these pheramones like a perfume and you are relatively invisible to them.

Musashi
2003-Jul-14, 06:04 AM
Yeah, I was wondering why they don't attack each other too!

No real spoiler, but why do the main characters act so stupid some times? It was the plot devices poking through reality, but mostly it was done well.

I think the reason they could spread so quickly was because of the surprise factor and the desire to not kill your friends. As far as guns go, it's too bad for the people that they were in England, as they have something like zero private gun ownership IIRC.

Humphrey

spoiler.......

Like when whats his name walks into the gas station?
Or releases that infected guy at the end?

Musashi
2003-Jul-14, 06:23 AM
spoiler.....

.

.

YES! He is being pretty cocky for someone who already caused the death of one of his cohorts with his carelessness. I can understand releasing the infected guy kinda, but I wouldn't have done it. I mean, he had a gun!

REALLY BIG SPOILER....

I think if England was really under quarentine, there would have been more observation going on. There would have been military jets flying constand sorties over England. Also, why couldn't they get HAM radio or television from olaves outside of England, like France?

Humphrey
2003-Jul-14, 06:36 AM
Yes, i can pick up shrotwave transmissions from Israel on a short wave radio we had! I can't believe they could not pick one of those up.

I agree with the sorties, plus satelites would of picked up survivors. Also, I bet a few commando teams would of made infiltrations.

Spoilers.......

I wonder about the rumors that NY and Paris were infected. What did they do? Did they nuke them? OR was the rumours false? I think this movie mneeds a sequil, or at least some more information!

Isn't it the sign of a good movie if you discuss it afterwords?

The Supreme Canuck
2003-Jul-14, 06:38 AM
Or a very bad one. Like Armageddon. Ugh!

Musashi
2003-Jul-14, 06:41 AM
I thought that the idea of the movie was great. I've always wondered what it would be like to wake up in a world that had been mostly or completely depopulated. A sequel, if well done, would be great. It could show what was happening around the world during the events in the movie. There could even be other enclaves of survivors. What do you call a sequel that runs concurrent with the original?

I am always looking for suggestions. I know that I must get my hands on as much Ursula K. LeGuin as possible. Just finished a book of short stories by her I "borrowed" from the camp ground I go to. I am hooked. ( I plan on returning the book when I go next time, along with a few new ones for the shelves.)

Musashi

LeGuin is very good. CJ Cherryh is pretty good sci-fi. Umm, Elizabeth Moon has good sci-fi and fantasy. Modesitt. Uh, can't think, too late... Niven, Pournelle. More details later. :D

Security was curious as to the weight of the camera, until they realized it was old, and they made them heavier then.
The window seat I had on the way out was a 'winger', so I reserved 1F on return (B737). 1F is normally used for wheelchairs so I could have been 'bumped'. Next time I will try 2A or 2F, depending on the north/south view from the flightpath.
Bring lots of film. I used 48-36 frames per 1hr flight time, and changed 2-3 frames before the rolls were empty in case I might miss a shot.

Nice weather, nice trip, Thanx to TSC for good advice.

Pinemarten
2003-Aug-31, 04:07 AM
I should have phrased it differently.
They didn't ask about it, but when they picked it up, they had to use both hands. Then they gave me a strange look.
The look went away after it passed their tests and they realized it was 'just an old, heavy, camera'.

Oh. Still, having a security guy at an airport take any interest in you is... disconcerting.

So, other than the... unpleasantness... it seems that you had a good trip, right? (I assume so since you said that you did in a previous post, but it seems polite to ask anyway. )

Oh. Still, having a security guy at an airport take any interest in you is... disconcerting.
No.
I feel added security may be needed.
I know I am in Canada's "big brother" computer already, and probably INTERPOL's as well. That is due to me being in the reserves years ago.
I feel I have nothing to hide. When I get pulled over for speeding etc, I consider it our democratic laws at work.
My opinion of modern democracy is another story.
When it gets to the point of being persecuted for my opinion, then..........

It was a wonderful trip. I think I was just written off as a local yokel tourist by the officials.

The Supreme Canuck
2003-Aug-31, 04:36 PM
I also think that added security is a good thing, but it's still not a good feeling to be the guy they decide to search.

Anyway, I'm glad that you had a great trip and being a yokel isn't that bad. I've been one myself.

While its not exactly a vacation I will probably be offline for a while starting tomorrow. Hurricane Fabian is going to hit Bermuda tomorrow so it is likely that the island will be without power. Depending on the severity of the hurricane, the power could be out for as long as a week or more.

Of course that means I won't have to work and can instead go to the beach! 8) Goes to show that there are upsides to everything.

While its not exactly a vacation I will probably be offline for a while starting tomorrow. Hurricane Fabian is going to hit Bermuda tomorrow so it is likely that the island will be without power...
Of course that means I won't have to work and can instead go to the beach! 8) Goes to show that there are upsides to everything.

So, if Fabian hits, you won't be able to go to work, but you can go to the beach? Are you sure you want to be at the beach in the middle of a category 3 hurricane? :o

The power could be out for a week or more. So once the hurricane passes over (about a day) I still can't work until the power is restored - I don't even have windows in my office! So if the power hasn't been restored its time to hit the beach. 8)

Recent forecasts has it hitting Bermuda dead-on. That's not good, there hasn't been a direct hit of a category 3 (or worse) hurricane in decades. :(

Reminds me of a story that my friend told me. He's in air cadets and was staying at the air force base in Cold Lake, Alta. for a summer "camp." Now it's a tradition to steal utensils from the mess. So he grabbed a butter knife and put it into his carry-on during the first week and forgot about it.

Weeks later he was due to return home. He gave his carry-on to the security people to be x-rayed and was asked, "Do you have a knife in your bag?" Since he had forgotten about it, he said, "Nope!" Big mistake. Next thing he knew, he was sitting in front of an armed MP, with his hands zip-tied behind his back, watching all of his friends pass by him to board the plane. He wasn't charged, but was reprimanded, and now has an amusing story to tell his friends. :D

Yeah... I lost a little keychain knife (blade abour 3/4" long, and about as sharp as a fingernail). I mostly carried it because of the bottle opener/screwdriver it had on the other end. Two previous times I remembered to take it off my keychain, but the last time I forgot. Bye-bye... :(

Okay I'm back! Hurricane Fabian didn't do much to my neighbourhood. My house had no damage - didn't even lose a window pane, just a few fallen branches in the yard. Power came back on last night and the office is also up and running. Sadly, others on the island were not as fortunate, there is a lot of roof damage in some areas and while about half the island now has power some homes won't be reconnected for a least another week. :(

Thanks for the concern. It was unfortunate that 4 people died after being swept off of a bridge but other than that the damage wasn't as bad as it could have been. I was back at work on Monday and 95%+ of the island should be up and running by Thursday - pretty impressive recovery time from a Category 3 hurricane.

Of course, I'm now hearing about another hurricane (Isabella?) that might be heading this way . . . 8-[

LOL to Humphrey and digitalspector.

Charlie, I am curious who is in the picture behind you and why is there a tripel 0 on their car?

Musta missed this one...

Visible thru the car in the driver's window is longtime friend and rally official Tom Nelson of Colorado. If I remember right, 000 was driven by National Pro Rally Series Steward Dan Coughnour (I was on his pit crew when he started rallying), and riding shotgun is Joe Andreini, perennial competitor/event staff member/Michigan booster, who goes by the moniker 'Uncle Joe'.

Why 3 zeros?

Car 000 is part of the organizing staff, and is first through the stage. It runs well in advance of the cars, and makes sure that everyone is where they belong, there are plenty of log sheets, the clocks are set right, if marshals are needed they are posted from the group that follows with him, if there's a course problem it gets called in to HQ and appropriate notifications are made...a general check on things. John Q. Public is warned that the road is about to be closed to public use, and if you're going, now's the time.

Car 00 runs maybe 30 minutes ahead of the competitors. This car is the one that makes the stage closed to any other than rally traffic. After Car 00 comes thru, the stage is considered to be administratively ready to run: everyone and everything is where they/it belong(s), no one's where they aren't allowed, everyone's awake and doing their jobs.

Car 0 comes thru 15 minutes ahead of the competitors, and he comes thru at speed. This year's car 0 was driven by Mark Utecht, a former multiple national champion in Production GT class. Cat 0's pass is the last check that everything is ready to go. Car 0 is treated as a competitor for administrative purposes. After Car 0 comes through, the stage is considered open for competition, and the cars can show up at any time. Until the passing of the Sweep Team, the stage is a hot race course.

Clear as mud, ain't it?

I'm (still) on Winter Break right now, so I've been much less frequent. I'll probably be more regular once I get back to school.

I leave tomorrow for JREF's The Amazing Meeting (TAM) for a few days and then on a weeks vacation. Probably be back on the 24th. 8)

BA and Hutch are also going to be at TAM so I expect they won't be around for a few days either.

I'm going to be in Europe until around the 1st of April. School trip, if you'll believe it!

No chance you'll visit Belgium/the Netherlands?

'Fraid not. It'll be Italy, Monaco, southern France, and Spain. I would like to head through Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands at some point, though.

Those first four would be enough for one visit I think! We take 4 years to visit them all! (Well, Monaco and part of southern France can be done on one trip) :)

Well, I'll have to wait a bit longer before a BABB'er comes to visit me :)

I'm actually considering taking my second year of university at a Queen's University (a Canadian school) campus in the UK. If I do that, I'll make sure to come down and see you. :)

Won't be for a couple years yet, though.

By the time you've visited all BABBers in the UK, you won't have time left to come to the continent!

Little explanation please?

I'm (jokingly) saying that since I have bad luck, it seems very possible that you moving to Ottawa as I move away would happen.

Now that you explain it, It is so clear and simple. I perfectly understand the construction of the sentence and the meaning of your response. If I hadn't been on a sidetrack, I would have got it without further explanation.

I was on a sidetrack because I thought you made an end to my sentence:

"I moved to ottawa with your luck" I was thinking it might have been some expression for you s.o. I had never heard before or something like that  #-o

I'm leaving for Italy tomorrow for a six week trip staying with my girlfriend and her family. Internet access is scarce, and given my situation I doubt I'll be bending over backwards to find time for posting. :D I wish everyone a happy and healthy summer and I will post plenty of pictures when I return. Until then! Arrivederci! 8)
