View Full Version : Explain Your Avatar

This may have been a thread a while back, but there are many new posters.

Therefore...

My avatar is the result of a BB "crisis" a while back concerning copyrighted material. Even though the picture I was using was a small clip and drastically reduced in quality, thus meeting the requirements for "fair use", it still ran the risk of being considered "copyrighted" material.

Therefore I was presented with a challenge: create an avatar that would in no way be taken for copyrighted material.

Hence the current incarnation.

What's the story behind yours?

Note: Avatar has changed since this was posted. The avatar referred to in this post looked like this:

I love frogs and other amphibians, and I am one of the semi-official tree-huggers around this place. I was looking for a picture on the web that was small and bright and found this picture of a blue-jean frog (a kind of poison arrow frog). At the time I had just seen them on a trip to Costa Rica, so it seemed perject.

In the very scary J-horror computer game Silent Hill 2, 30-something James Sunderland is unable to come to terms with the death of his wife Mary some 3 years ago. Then one day he gets a letter from her, telling him she is in the town of Silent Hill, where they once went on holiday. How can this be? Surely she really did die?

So anyway, driven by curiosity, he goes to the town. The place is covered in mist and crawling with some very disturbing monsters straight out of his psyche. And there's Maria. She looks exactly like Mary, except she dresses in sexy clothes instead of the frumpy stuff Mary wore, and she's got a very different attitude...

Maria is the woman in my avatar.

Mine is the serpinski gasket. Take any three non-colinear points on a sheet of paper/graph, ect. Now draw a point halfway between either of the other two points. From there, pick another of the three main points at random and draw a dot halfway between them. From your current position, pick another of the three main bounding points at random and draw a dot halfway between your current position and the bound.

Repeat ad infinitum, and this is the shape you get: it contains 3 copies of itself within itself.

That makes me think of Jonathan Coulton's song "Mandelbrot Set" (Listen to it and download it free, along with most of his other music, at http://www.jonathancoulton.com. You won't be sorry, the man is brilliant! Warning: There is a small amount of "colorful" language used in this song)

Mine is Cloud from Final Fantasy 7
In this case from the Advent Children movie

Someone I identify with, although You guys would never know it from these threads.
But face to face I'm often observed as very quiet, unemotional and contemplative. As well as carrying ancient greifs.
Back in '98 when I first played the game, you could change the characters name. I named him Neverfly (Yes, Neverfly is a very old concept with me and has much to do with what I've described in this post).

After the Blade movies came out I was compared to that character as well by many people. But my skin is much lighter and Im not quite a bloodsucker, so I stuck with Cloud.

It's of the stone circle known to archaeologists as "Callanish II" and locals as "Cnoc Ceann a' Ghàraidh" - part of the megalithic complex of stone circles and arrangements focused on the Callanish Stones on the Island of Lewis. These arrangements make Stonehenge look, and feel, like a supermarket car park.

My avatar is the Danish flag, called Dannebrog in Danish.

My handle, DanishDynamite, is perhaps a bit more interesting to explain.

It stems from the Danish National Soccer Team anthem back in the late 80's. Back then, the Danish National team was a force to be reckoned with. We thus, for example, won the European Cup in 1992, much to the surprise of everyone, as we hadn't even qualified for the finals! Long story.

Anyway, the chorus of the anthem back then was:

"We are red,
We are white,
We are Danish Dynamite!"

See flag for further explanation.

Handle explained. :)

Mine is a create-your-own-avatar-using-Lego, which I created here (http://www.reasonablyclever.com/mini/flash/minifig.swf).

This was as close as I could get to what I look like in real life. The background is a volcano which I liked better than all the others--I would have preferred a space exploration theme, but volcanoes are cool, too. In my hand I'm holding a scroll to represent my commitment to learning.

Mine is the Emblem of the 8th Air Force USAAF. 'the Mighty 8th'

It's a photo of the badge on one of my A2 Flying Jackets.
