tonight at about 8:00pm, i just happened to look up to the sky at an airplane going by from west to east.
nothing weird about that, right?
well there was a light that was following it. at first, i thought it was venus or something. but it was tailing the plane and literally following it.
as they passed over and went past my location, i was able to tell that the "ufo" was a smaller jet that was maybe 1000 feet behind and 100 or so feet lower than the leading jet..
the first lead jet was what looked like a 747- it had 2 engines on each wing and was silver and white in color, while the trailing jet was definitely smaller and only had one engine under each wing and was red with a silver belly. they were flying low enough to make out the colors and see the shapes of the engines and what not with the naked eye, but too high to see what airlines they belonged to...
anyways, that's my ufo sighting for the day.and 4 other people saw it, too.
can anyone explain to me why two civilian airliners would be flying so close to each other- in formation, no less- 200 miles away from the next big airport? i've never seen planes that close to each other and going the exact same direction at cruising altitude before.

It happens sometimes.

The radio went out so they pulled up along side eachother and were yelling at eachother out the window.

Are you sure they were civilian airplanes?

Sounds like a refueling encounter of the ordinary kind.

i thought of the refueling thing, but there was no boom or hose hanging out of the back of the lead plane.
my first thought was Air Force One with some kind of fighter escort, until i started to see what the second plane was and was able to make out the coloration better on both planes.
i think the second plane was a Northwest Airlines plane- maybe the pilot of the first plane knew of a really good bar in Minneapolis, and he told the NWA plane to follow him? or maybe NWA couldn't find a pilot for the second plane, being the end of the month and all, so they asked another airline to tow it?
( i kid, i kid. just embellishing on two relatively recent news items concerning NWA pilots)
it was probably something really mundane, but it was rather strange.

novaderrik: Love. One of the reasons the computer flies most planes after take-off was to save gas from captains' idiosynchrasies...they were notorious in the pre-computer days for flying over a babe's house and wagging their wings, like hotshots from Top Gun. Maybe love was in the air...or a stewardess in the window..(he'll get his anatomy chewed out when he lands though,if he deviated from a flight plan...). pete

Or any kind of plane with some kind of escort.

Its never mundane (at least to the viewer). ;)
