Hello members and friends.

on Sept 12, at about 5:30 AM from Long Island New York, I could see this large bright star, when facing East. it was so beatiful and looked so close that you could grab it. at first I thought it was a plane. but it was not. it defenetly was a star.

can anyone tell me which star is that?

Gotcha...it's not a star

It's Venus. At least you didn't mistake it for a UFO like many do.
I verified it with this star chart for NYC (http://www.heavens-above.com/skychart.asp?Y=2007&M=9&D=12&H=5&N=30&Lat=40.714&Lng=-74.006&Loc=New+York&TZ=EST&SL=on&SN=on&BW=1&SZ=500) at that time. Not that I needed to, but I wanted to back up my assertion.

Before European settlers arrived in New Zealand the native inhabitants had two names for Venus. As a evening star and latter as a morning star. They never did figure it as a planet as they had no conception of what a planet might be. Then after some head scratching and thought they cracked it and joined the names, realizing it was the same object... and built a calender of events which included Venus. All this over a 1500 years ago... we have not come so far... :)
