View Full Version : Should ToSeek honor the "kilopi limit?"

Please help me with this terrible moral quandary.

How long will the poll be active for? When will a decision be made?

gethen

I voted ad astra! I like the feeling of security I get from seeing those big numbers after "To Seek." Makes me feel that there's someone out there who really knows how this place runs.
And if a third person recognizes the "kilopi limit" it may take on the status of board etiquette. Do you really want that on your conscience?

When will a decision be made?

Sometime in the next 142 posts. ;)

It's a question of what I want to have on my conscience: establishing an arbitrary limit on post counts or perhaps egotistically going beyond the limit.

When the time comes for me I'll have to make the decision there, and not here, in the past. :) I think it should be up to the person, what they think. I was kind of worried that a post limit might start and then if you want to go beyond that and keep your user name you would be a pariah.. I certainly won't think that way. The choice is yours, ToSeek. :D -Colt

After the whopping seven votes that have been recieved so far, I'd say that it's up to you in the long run. Six of us feel that someone needs the Bad Post-Doc ranking. I'm one of those. Maybe the post limit can be established after that, but until that time comes, I'd say, "Go for the gold."

2003-Jul-23, 04:19 AM
I thinks grapes was pretty clever about the kilo-pi thing, but those getting close to the kilopi limit shouldn't feel obligated to change their username at 3142. Roll on!

The Supreme Canuck
2003-Jul-23, 04:42 AM
You know, this is all g99/Humphrey's fault! He was the first to honour the limit. Won't he be surprised when he gets back if ToSeek as broken the barrier...

Anyway, I say go for it!

Accomplished or no ToSeek - you definitely have contributed volumes to this board. There are some who are no less deserving than you to become a Bad Post-Doc - but definitely nobody more deserving.

Besides, is your name Kilopi?

Don't feel that g99/humphrey has set a precedent, for he contributes too much fluff anyway!!

[NB: Sniping at vacationing board members has a surprising level of fun]

What??? Humphrey is/was g99??? How come I never hear about these things? Who else has a new name(other than Grapes/kilopi). By the way, is kilopi's number 3141.59265358979323...?

Yes, honor the great contributions of kilopi by following the tradition. Sure, it's a recent tradition; only carried out by a couple people, but a tradition nonetheless. :P

Ok, really, I just think it's your call.

Well, Grapes turning his name to kilopi (kilo-pi), I beleive was part of his humor. (Besides being easier to type.) g99, I believe, was just feeling guilty that he accelerated on "fluff" posts.

I actually voted the third choice. I know there is nostalgia with reaching the new levels, but it really is just a measure of post count, not "astronomy-know-how count!"

Although it could be our own little "game" we have on the Board, I at least would be getting annoyed by everyone changing their names! (And then we would have to keep explaining to new people why some posters were being called by two different names, and ya-da ya-da ya-da.)

Humphrey
2003-Jul-26, 01:55 AM
ToSeek: Neb. was right. I did not feel that i deserved to pass Kilopi. Many of his posts have value. Most of mine don't. Go for it.

Now Canuck: i know you better not think about passing 3142. You definitely don't deserve that. :-P

P.S. To all of you snipers....your time will come. I do not forget ....mmmuuahahahahaha!.....mmmuuuahahahahahahaha! Boop!

Oh and Canuck and Musashi: When i take over the world you will both be assigned to guard duty over the presidantial toilet paper.

There used to a table in the FAQ before the upgrade to phpBB2. You're next big number of 201, when you'll become a Bad Intern. Then 301 when you become a Bad Fellow. After, it's 50 for Bad Grad. Then 1001 for Bad Master. Then 2001 for Bad PhD. At 5000, a number not yet reached, you earn the rank of Bad PostDoc. But we've informally declared the kilopi threshold to be the way to enlightenment.

But what value is gamma? Pi is 3.142 and hence kilopi is 3142.

Oops
2003-Nov-29, 11:03 PM
Gamma = (The integral from 0 to infinity of) -ln(x)/e^x dx
I think it's about 5.770..., but I'm not sure, and I can't find it in my notes.

Edit: It is actually more like 0.5772... Unfortunately, I don't know of a metric prefix for 10 000.

ToSeek
2005-Oct-29, 06:09 PM
The first person to reach 3142 posts (1000*pi, e.g., kilopi) stopped there and started over again (as "kilopi", appropriately enough). G99 was second and did likewise, reincarnating as Humphrey. However, when I came along, I wanted to keep my username and so kept on going. Now, of course, we have plenty of users with more than kilopi posts, and it's become an unofficial demarcation/coming-of-age for some of the older or more prolific posters.

if i'm not mistaken, the reasoning was that there were certain threads that just didn't transfer over properly, and ended up deleted. if you happened to post in said threads, those posts were removed from your total.

heck, hub' lost his whole identity. there's a ton of his posts that have no name (but you can ALWAYS tell which are his ;) ).

Just saw the relative relevant dates on this thread, but anyway, 10.25 posts a day is hardly excessive.
cf the poster above, who shall remain nameless, (no offence Kai :);) ) with almost 40 per day. And that's not excessive either IMHO.

I, for one, hope I never have to review all of TooSeek's posts for any reason.

Although, it would be funny if you came out and stated that you've buried an expansive treasure, and the clues to its whereabouts are hidden throughout your posts. :)

He Works? Then where does he find all that time to...

I think he's been holding out on us, sequestering a temporal expander like that without our knowledge...

For shame!

I thought I'd drag this thread out of the depths for the heck of it. I've passed 3,000 posts tonight, thanks to a number of not-really-useful posts this summer. At this rate, I'll hit kilopi soon, after five years of posting. I'm no ToSeek, but I get by.

It did occur to me a couple months ago that there's an obvious progression of usernames (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dax_%28Star_Trek%29#Official_hosts) for me to follow under the outdated-tradition. The gender issues and such are academic at this point, since I'm not changing my username. I do suspect, however, that I wouldn't be alone in such thoughts, especially considering some recent visitor messages to my profile. :)

Anyhow, I just wanted to make a fun "yay me" post as I start to pass these milestones.

P.S. The link above is to Wikipedia's article about my fictional namesake.

As a potential police sketch artist, you've hereby been commissions to sketch out all of ToSeek's posts in their entirety.

I think that discussing a megapi limit for ToSeek might be more useful at the moment. Though I'm sure that he appreciates your feed back on this issue.

Make sure you get in your vote for FDR's re-election too.

By the way (while we are picking on Fazor), I assume TooSeek is the evil twin of ToSeek, but the one that uses Google a little too often.

Um, Tobin Dax, surely you of all people know that they made a numbering error in the movies, going from IV to VI without making one in between.

Ah, see that you can pick on. The "vote for the underdog" thing was obviously a joke. For some reason, I always mentally picture it as "TooSeek" because everything I search for, he seems to have already found it 'too'.
