It's possible that the galaxy has just been going slowly, forming stars at a dramatically reduced rate in the past. But something kicked that rate of star formation into high gear in the recent past.
Very old and very young stars in the same nearby system. It would seem rather likely that this is a universal truth: Old and young stars coexisting; since we also see very old stuff very far away.
