Your playing online (eve in my case), bufferin the latest voyager episode and downloading that new track you wanted through a P2P network.. an then it happens..
Not Respondin...
You freeze in a moment of sheer terror, the bufferin halts - the music stops - and your ship is left stranded against half a dozen rats with nothing more than your total destruction on their npc minds...
Amid curses and furious looks to your PC u hit the task manager to find the culprit and end its process with a vicous stab on the mouse button.
And what happens?
Does it eliminate the random gibberings of a lost data stream and bring your ship safely home? O no..
Does it bring the cheeky blighter to task and bring a frozen 7 of 9 to life?
Nope..
It trashes your ship - sends voyager to some dark recess that only the electronic elves no about - and promptly tells u that that MP3 file is in fact unrecognizable by any codec known to man...
Is it me? Have I got a vindictive PC that wishes me only misery at its keyboard?
Have I kicked it once too often?
Well I wish I flamin' well knew!

This thread is open to those wishing to tell some tragic event in their life because of Not Respondin...
We will understand and know the pain you have suffered..
Be brave and get it off your chest..
Know that u are not alone and many others have suffered the curse of this....... thing!
Also to anyone who has a cure for this vicious and nasty thing called Not Respondin..
Bring your remedies here and go down in the annuals of history as the cure for Not Respondin....

I hate that. At school, once, I was trying to watch the Cosmos samples on the Discovery website, but they were freezing so much that I just gave up.
And, by the way, welcome to BAUT, Infinite Horizions!
(Great handle and avatar. My brother has one of those lightning-globes.)

Sounds like you've got a modem throwing you an erect middle finger. Pick your torrents. Trying to do too much at once and your machine will rebel.

Are you running things through a router? For years, I used a Linksys router that worked great, until I decided to download some torrents. Then, I could count on it to lock up at some point, and I'd have to power cycle it. With a bit of research, I found that it was notorious about that. I replaced the router with a newer one and the problem went away (well, almost - there are rare occasions where it locks up).

ty for the avatar comment.. I wanted 1 of them for ages when I was younger.

I use a BThub running at 8mb/s.. I've found that in most
cases it tends to be a conflict between two programs and they lock the hub up.. hence the loss of everything running through it.
But don't no why... I can run 3/4 online programs through the hub at one time and the PC is hardly ticking and not a problem, but run two that don't like each other and there's hell to pay..
A classic I have.. though not a true Not Respondin is Windows Live Messenger won't open the email box.
An BT Yahoo browser can be very tempremental. I had to delete IE7 to solve a lot of problems, even though it wasn't running.

Also don't use bittorrent as they're very resource hungry.. and a great for Not Respondin..

Hmmm. not advertising here but I can't use winmx as the hub (curse) won't have it without deactivating the DMZ. So have stuck with limewire which seems ok and leaves the cpu alone...

Use utorrent. Small, fast and very reliable. ;)

tried it.. was the best I found of the torrents mind u. was quick and had good sources, but still got the same grief when it got going... the prob seemed to b when you released cpu and memory from applications u used.
utorrent seemed to jump in these free spaces and then was a... hahaha.. can't curse... to move out when u wanted the space back.. especially if its bit rate was doin well.
Also it slowed my eve far worse than the 1 i'm using now... I mean yes, eve does slouch when new systems are downloading etc... I don't expect perfection... its jus that sum r worse than others...

Would like to point out I'm not advocating the use of any products here, what I use seems to be good for my machine. I would imagine that diffrent specs and set-ups make a large amount of diffrence to good and reliable running of the PC.
But curse that Not Respondin...

Infinite Horizons,

Would you please use English rather than netspeak if for no other reason than respect for us old [fogies] who are not so fluent?

Infinite Horizons,

Would you please use English rather than netspeak if for no other reason than respect for us old [fogies] who are not so fluent?

What exactly is old fogie?
I'd like to point out I've seen the Berlin wall come down, put up with the Bay City Rollers, watched Armstrong step on to the moon and was waving a rattle - possibly white with a red cross - when England won the world cup in'66..
I do not consider myself an old fogie!
A bit mad perhaps - but not fogied
Not sure what you mean by net talk.. If its the abbreviations then MS was microsoft.. If it's u or y etc.. then why not? haha sorry:)

If not for the old fogies, do it for the young fogies who can't stand it.

Or, you know, don't download music. Just saying, is all...

It was the net abbreviations that were referred to.
As has been discussed multiple times here, the abbreviations may be faster to type, but they are slower to read.

Make it too much of a bother to read what you write, and your ideas are lost because people won't bother reading them. Your call.

Fair enough - wasn't intending to be awkward or algebraic:)

The modems were created by man.

They evolved.

The rebelled.

THere are many copies.

...and they have a plan.

If you guys had to use dial up, like some of us, you would never moan & ladydog (the real word is banned here - I got a warning once) about anything that gets you out of that.

:clap::clap::clap:
Many sites seem to have the attitude that if you're too cheap to get a DSL or other broadband connection, they don't need you! Some of us do not live in the big cities where it's available! I don't even have TV! Help is on the way. AT&T is running fiber-optic cable my way. When I finally do get high speed access, I won't forget which sites treated me like a second class citizen!

Computers, like nature, can work both for or against you, according to random chance.

The Bell Dial-up sans merci

/ with apologies to John Keats /

Ah, what can ail thee, wretched nerd,
Alone at your desk loitering;
The picture's wither'd from your screen,
And no speakers sing.

Ah, what can ail thee, wretched nerd,
So haggard and so woe-begone?
Your virtual memory is full,
And the screensaver's on.

I met a witch out on the web
Full beautiful, a fairy's child;
Her hair was brown, her foot was light,
And her green eyes wild.

Methought I'd taken ecstasy,
Or crack cocaine and MJ too,
And sure in language strange she said,
I love thee true.

She took me to her elfin grot,
And there she gazed and sighed deep,
And there I... suddenly the Dial-up,
Went quietly to sleep.

And this is why I soujurn here,
Alone at my desk desponding,
'Cos though my Dial-up's OK now,
Her web-page is "Not Respondin'."
