I read the headline for this article (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071211/ap_on_sc/northern_lights) and did a double take. I learned in elementary school, or so I thought, what the energy source was.

I guess there is some new research in the following paragraphs though. Hopefully I haven't been tooseek'd.

Candidate for bad reporting? It makes it sound like scientists knew nothing.

In March, the satellites detected a burst of northern lights

To scientists' surprise, the geomagnetic storm powering the auroras raced 400 miles in a minute across the sky.
And why was this a surprise?
