I was going through some old posts and reading up on some of the people who have been banned. I was wondering if there was some way to find all of the posters who have been banned? I thought it might make an interesting read.

*******************************

Ok. I am going to try and keep up the new list here in this post. (I was going to keep editing the 2nd post, but it is 4000+ characters too long to edit. In the near future Iwill go through it and edit out the link portions to free up some character space).

Maybe a list would be a good way for others to browse banned posts!

I am grouping usernames that are the same person.

So far: 116?? (not counting the last two on the list since they aren't really banned here.)

I know there are a bunch I need to put here for an update, but that is a lot of work. :P

Great idea. I'm always looking for info on the banned people. We could include links to their last posts, too (or at least the one(s) that got them banned, if it was just one). It could be a good example to those that don't know the rules very well.

Pardon me. What's trolling?

I'm new to all this board stuff.

The Supreme Canuck
2003-Aug-28, 08:23 PM
A troll is someone who posts stuff to irritate, annoy, anger and try to get others to flame him/her for their personal amusement. They want to make life hard for good posters and are just trying to get cheap laughs. They want attention, so the general rule is to never reply to a troll.

I am grouping usernames that are the same person.
(Final)Yul seems to claim, in this post (http://www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=140899#140899), to have been Spoq, Dunash, Mifletz, Caryn, Prince, Yul, and a half-a-dozen others.

Musashi
2003-Sep-15, 04:01 PM
Yeah, I just saw that, what do you think the validity of that assertion is? I have only seen the later incarnationsof Prince, and Yul seemed a lot more polite (most of the time).

TriangleMan
2003-Sep-15, 04:42 PM
His assertion, while possible, is unlikely. This thread (http://www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=27381&highlight=#27381) has Yul, Dunash and Caryn all involved at around the same time, occasionally two of them comment on the same day.

Anyway, it means that Yul is either:

a) lying (sour grapes at being banned, perhaps?)
b) sad (sock puppets, Yul? Especially responding to each others' posts? Lame, Lame, Lame.)

Musashi
2003-Sep-15, 04:43 PM
And don't forget that Prince was there too :)

Musashi
2003-Sep-15, 04:45 PM
But, some of the stuff Dunash says seems related to the post that got Yul banned...

Musashi
2003-Sep-15, 04:50 PM
And Yul and Prince share some characteristics... Michelson Morely reliance.... Quote and runs...

I think maybe Yul/price used the different identities to allow him to act differently in a thread. Prince could come in and be a jerk, and Yul could follow up in a calmer manner, gaining some respect by not being like Prince. Just a theory :)

TriangleMan
2003-Sep-15, 04:52 PM
And don't forget that Prince was there too :)

Ugh, so what's that then, Yul claims to have been four different posters in the same thread? Like I said, lying or sad.

Not worth my time to investigate further. This all gets a big  from me.

Well if they are one and the same - they're a very sad character - even disagreeing with one's self?!?!

In the Tychonic geocentric model, which is kinematically identical to the Copernican, there will of course be no brightness change. We're working on a response to your Ptolemaic epicycles question.

Since today's epicycles are fitted to today's
observed motions, the variations in brightness, as well as distance, are indeed observed.

If you go to the memberlist, it will give you a list of all the members. You can then select to sort them by total post in either asending or desending order. There are about 12 pages of people with zero post, and several with just one or two.

There are other ways to sort people as well, such as join date, name, location...

At least on the present version of the board it was Prince who was banned first, then Yul. Violating the rules and getting the BA cheezed are the most likely reasons for their banishment.

Whats scary about Yul/Prince is that with his (final)Yul post he claimed to be a few different people who would at times be at odds. I am wondering if his final curtain call was an attempt to take casualties down with him/her/it.

Like the BA said, civility counts. Posters like yourself, the other Sitchinites, ETUFO supporters, ExpErdMann and so forth can continue to debate your respective topics because you do so in a civil manner. The BABB would be kind of boring without against-the-mainstream posters. :)

I have been as good as banned, because for some reason or another I have been unable to log on. Perhaps it is my computer stupidity, or something or other.

Anyway, with the help of Bad Astronomer, et al., I have finally found a way. I think that I misread the FAQ (or read it too hastily).

I tend to spend much more time reading the posts of others, rather than in writing myself. There are a lot of GOOD writers here on Bad Astronomy (and some real dummies, too), so it is a lot of fun to read rather than to write. Perhaps it is laziness. Actually, I must have misread the FAX or have been too impatient to read it carefully. I finally guessed what I needed to do, and it worked. So, as the saying goes, IF AT FIRST (OR SECOND, THIRD, FOURTH, ETC.) YOU DON'T SUCCEED, TRY, TRY, TRY AGAIN!

Therefore, when you do not see anything I have written, I am either unable to get on line, or I am reading the stuff the rest of you write (usually on the regular threads where astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology are discussed). Somebody needs to read it, for crying out loud. So many of the posts are written from real knowledge that it is very difficult to write anything to equal it. This is one of the best Bulletin Boards on the WEB. Actually, I, myself, know of none better than Bad Astronomy when it comes to scientific bulletin boards!

Especially if that younger person makes a valid point. It's too bad for Till that we weren't willing to see the BABB turn into a cesspool I guess. There is no need for cussing on this board. I cus in real life. I cuss on the irc. When I post here, I have the chance to self-censor my cussing (on the occasion that I would feel like cussin). This is a good thing. Using a cussword here hardly does anything that an excalmation point won't accomplish. I cannot see any valid reason for cussing on an astronomy board...

Prudery has little to nothing to do with good manners. Good manners are just rule-of-thumb subsets of morals, anyway. Which are the things we all need to get along as a society.

Till was either a deliberate chain-jerker or just a jerk (hard to tell the difference). The giveaway: the down-the-nose spew about youth and IQ. I have no idea what my IQ would be if tested and don't care (nor about anyone else's, either). And I have learned much by listening to my son at any age.

Grady didn't look at the numbers, and that's why he got fired. After 105 pitches, Pedro's batting average against is (eek!) .370!!! He had to make the biggest managerial decision of his career, and he passed on it. You NEVER ask your pitcher if he wants to stay in the game. If he's at all worth his stones, he'll beg to stay in. Don't be hard on yourself. This guy speaks rather eloquently, but also makes the assumption that you, being younger than him, have a lower IQ. IQ has very little to do with age, or education level. Granted, someone who has achieved an MS/MA or Ph.D level degree probably has a better than average IQ. There are also children in elementary school who would achieve a similar score on an IQ test, but know nothing about Physics or Advanced Math (yet). On the other hand, there are people well past school age that can't think their way out of a wet paper bag. I think what we had here was an educated troll, who probably knows the difference, but saw a target and took a shot. That is why I like this place. Judging by the tone of CBs posts, and how quickly they turned nasty without provocation, this is obviously a former banned member striking back. How novel.

I like the BA's comment about not feeding the troll--I do not know if anyone feed him/her--to me everyone just seemed to be having fun at the post.

I wonder, who has the record for having the fewest number of post before being banned? CB seemed to have just 3, has anyone managed it in just one or two post?

I has someone be rude to one of my coworkers today, then he told me to go to heck, do you think I could get the Bad Astronomer to ban him? Fortunatly (for him) he took off before another co-worker had a chance to call security and have him removed.

Sometimes the BA bans people but doesn't change their, um..., group or something in their profile, so even though they really are banned, it doesn't say so in their profile.

I often feel rather sad when a prolific poster like btimsah gets banned. Sure, he was annoying, frustrating, and impossible to convince of his errors. But at least he had a different point of view and sparked some interesting conversations.

In the wake of a banning, I sometimes find the board a bit duller. But only a bit.

Just a minor nitpick, but at 152 posts I would hardly consider btimsah1 a prolific poster. Why, even my 601 posts could hardly be considered prolific, not when compared to your 2055 posts!

Also, while I haven't reviewed all of his posts, it appears to me that he mainly posted about lunar conspiracies and such. I could be wrong, though.

I know I'm only new here, but, it seems to me that apart from the people who seem to deliberately post to provoke, the others who got banned seemed to forget their status and their responsibility. Their status makes them comfortable on the site but is also a beacon for some individuals to get as a trophy.

As a long time poster on another site I always keep in mind that the my status is more a disadvantage to good discussion. Some look at it like it's actually a direct measure of importance or inteligence, quite sad but true. Others feel intimidated and some do look for bringing down that trophy. Personally I would get rid of the whole status concept and leave it as a level playing feild. Regular posters would know who is who anyway.

Just a tip for not getting banned, it's like riding a motocycle on a busy highway : Assume everyone is out to get you and allway's keep a safety margin. :)

Just my 2cents worth....

It was a fairly productive return in only one month though!

Also, while I haven't reviewed all of his posts, it appears to me that he mainly posted about lunar conspiracies and such. I could be wrong, though.

Not so much lunar conspiracies, but he would come across an image with what he thought was an anomaly, then post it without offering any evidence for why or what that anomaly might be, and then get frustrated because we weren't getting excited over it.

My guess is that he was young, got excited about the whole Keith Laney scene and then got annoyed that the rest of us weren't falling over ourselves in equal excitement. I think he felt the sceptical questions and objections that were being raised were a personal attack. :( (Although by the end, it was getting a bit ugly, to which I contributed more than I should.)

I hope that one day soon he reads the 'Baloney-Detection Kit' section in Sagan's "Demon-Haunted World" - I think he would benefit a great deal from it.

I'll be the first to admit that I can be a real hot head at times. I've been in a couple heavy debates on this board but have always managed to restrain myself. One thing that I'll never do however is argue a case where I know science wins. I originally came to this board not knowing that the moon hoax was nothing more than a hoax itself, but I was open minded about it and changed my views accordingly.

Oh by the way, Canadians usually swear, and sometimes we curse, but I can't say I've ever cussed. ;)

First time I ever heard the word cuss was from a Californian girl I talked to online. Understanding the context it was used in, and knowing the similarity with the word curse, I managed to figure it out on my own. Still I must say, I found it to be a funny word. 8-[

I am open minded too for scientific explaination.
I wander why Science is still unable to explain the Mexican UFO`s video.

Herrera and the Mexican University scientists have failed to convince anyone about their explanations they have not even followed the scientific process by refusing to consult meteorologists before stating that was atmospheric sparks or balls lighting.Sad time for science. :-?

At least we are willing to offer explenations that are actually possible, as opposed to spouting out bizarre and completely impossible fantasies.

It is true that science cannot (at least right now) explain everything. However, a failed attempt at a possible scientific explanation sure as heck beats a blatantly phony and blatantly unrealistic fantasy. Just because science does not always give satisfactory results, does not mean that we should fabricate stories to explain what we do not know. [-X

New one to add to to the list, extrasense. Banned for several ad hominems in this thread. (http://www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=285018#285018)

I'll own up on the PS banning as BA saw the thread and my postings here (http://www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=281723#281723) pointing out who PS was. I guess he got cocky and forgot that some of us have a good memory for some things. I think we should have seen it earlier, but all these woowoo's are starting to sound the same to me.

But then again, it seems the entirety of the thread happened while I was in bed, or at work. I'm sort of regretting reading it, too.

I thought he would be banned after his "NASA idiots" comment, which was in the first page of thread. Regrettably, it went on for 3 pages.

I will say I expected him to hang around for at least a couple more pages, BA was really on the ball that time.

I'll say. I expected Extrasense to be banned before the first page was full.

Man, that guy seemed almost as crazy as Wiolawa...

You can't deny him his argument, though:
-- It looks like a stingray, therefor it is a stingray.
-- I can tell the difference between when something looks like a stingray, and when something obviously is.
-- Only people with mental problems see things where there are no things to see.

--hey, it works for Michael Moore. Either an idiot or part of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy (TM). We poke fun of it for posts here, but it's an argument that simply works for most people.

It's usually followed up by the person who disagrees and doesn't want to be considered an idiot getting very angry. Then, the Michael Moore or extrasense character construes that to mean they MUST be right, because why else would you get upset?

Oh please. Just pick any person who's famous that you don't like. It doesn't mean it's about politics. And someone will always disagree with you. I, personally, do not consider Michael Moore anything other than an entertainer. To me, mentioning him is like mentioning Bob Hope, only Bob Hope is funny and doesn't act like people who disagree with him are idiots. Like Michael Moore or not, you must have noticed his tone when people don't agree with him. That's not a political statement. It's a statement on his style.

Edited to add: I don't like Rush Limbaugh either, but he's not the name currently in the news. :D

Isn't BA supposed to have a thread where he updates the reasons for banning posters as well? I don't recall seeing it lately.

That's just the nature of trolls. I think it's the modern day equivalent of calling and hanging up on someone.

It's in Bad Bad Astronomy. It hasn't been updated lately, though I think there is ample reason to.

Generally, I'll try and reason with just about anyone but this latest "Obvious" person is just over the top. I guess some people are just trolls with absolutely no other motive other than to cause trouble. Here's (http://www.mj-holmes.com/trolls.htm) an article that explains the psychology behind this sort of behavior. I guess ignoring and banning is the only alternative.

Actually, I think (and this is only my opinion) that the BA saw this thread and said to himself, "Oh, look, it is already done... one day I will copy it over... " or, "One day I will link to it..." and just has been too busy to do so.

I'm posting this here because I refuse to feed the troll by posting on obvious' thread. Please people, don't feed the trolls...when something (like the obvious thread) happens, simply ignore it!

Now, I'm no trying to tell anyone what to do...I just don't see the point in responding when people chose to act like that.

For a while there I thought the discussion was about me, didn't see the missing Mr because it wasn't there :-? #-o
