Perhaps the solution to the problems scientists may have with their current theories is better solved by returning from "wild ideas" of the probabbly untestable?
What is the difference between "We live in an illusion(simulation)", and "our experiments and observations are nonsense, so let us drop science?

This is very similar to one of the (hypothetical) solutions to Fermi's Paradox:

That all civilizations beyond a certain level of technological evolution might chose to migrate
to much more agreeable environments in self-generated virtual worlds
(so their every-day life is not detectable for us in the 'real' universe)

I believe John Smart proposed this solution, and called it 'transcension'.
