Will I be able to see it okay with a not-so-fancy telescope?

It should get as bright as 10th magnitude around close approach, Monday night/Tuesday morning. There is a finding chart on the Sky and Telescope web site (http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/home/14346437.html), but for things that close you can do better by getting coordinates tailored to your location form the JPL Horizons web service (http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/horizons.cgi). At its closest, it will move about 2 degrees per hour, quite apparent at the eyepiece. A telescope of aperture 3" = 75mm or more from a reasonably dark site should show it, once you find it tracking against the stars. It will be a lot fainter the evening before, both from distance and less favorable illumination (so of course our local weather forecast gets worse as time goes on...)
