Spirit's gimpy right front wheel has turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The Mars Exploration Rover traversing around the Gusev Crater region on Mars has been forced to drive in reverse, dragging the jammed wheel behind. But that wheel gouged a trench a few inches deep through the Martian soil, revealing [...]

As I have mentioned before, these silica deposits have the composition (90 per cent silica opaline silica) and the appearance of being diatomaceous earth. A common mineral that occurs in many desert basins in Western United States.

Are you suggesting that the Martian soil in that area could be diatomaceous?

ETA: Never mind. I withdraw the question.

What did the microscope say? Diatoms aren't that small, are they?

PS: oops, this from the article. I thought there was a microscope of some sort
But since the rovers don't carry instruments that can detect microscopic life, for now the site can only be classified as a once habitable environment where liquid water and the energy needed for life were present.

Oh. They don't answer what you asked JESMKS? I thought they would help.

Maybe they answered the question for others.

Or at least amused someone.

They amused me. Sometimes that's enough.

"unearths"?

I guess that sounds better than "unmarses"
