The BA is going to be the president of the James Randi Educational Foundation. The details of course on his blog I just started this thread so everyone who may not read blog would know.

Here's a link to the BA's own blog entry about it (with many glowing comments):

Super-neat. Congratulations, el Presidente!

I know he's an ambigram fan. Mayhap he's never seen my JREF, and will spot it here:

Those are awfully big shoes to fill, but the BA's feet seem pretty big from here.

Wow. Just, wow. My first step towards skepticism was right here, with the Bad Astronomer and the Baut folks. Shortly thereafter, I ran in to randi.org and the JREF, and learned who James Randi is and what he stood for. I admire the heck out of both Mr. Plait and Mr. Randi. Now, Mr. Plait will now head up the JREF. I note that Mr. Plait mentioned that one of his priorities as president of the JREF will be educating children. EXCELLENT first step! I can't wait to see how it goes. Congratulations, Mr. Plait!

That being said, I can't help but worry a bit for Mr. Randi. Is this handover due to health concerns, or did he want to focus more on the board of directors for the JREF? I hope he is well. Someday I'm going to manage to go on one of the Amaz!ng meetings, and I'd love to see him there.

Yes. I believe that is a requirement. Check the JREF charter, someone.

Mr. Earl (or is it Speedo?), the press release from JREF says Randi wants to spend more time completing two books he's working on.

I would imagine that health concerns played into this, at least the timing of it if not the overall decision.

Hurray, BA!
"For he's a jolly bad fellow..."

You know, I have a hat just like the one he's wearing in that picture.

Heh. The speedo thing threw me off when I first came here :) No, that's not where I got the name from. That's a long story...

Anyway, I note above that I referred to Phil as "Mr. Plait". The man's got a doctorate. ACK! Well, in contrition, I've signed up Dr. Plait to a few months of Total Fark. He likes that place as much as I do. :)

Enjoy the present, and the new position at the JREF, Dr. Plait!

Just had a moment of fear: Doctor Plait's fark handle IS "The Bad Astronomer", isn't it?!
If not, someone undeserving just got free totalfark...

I couldn't help myself.

I googled "white beard", in images, to get the beard, and funnily enough, after I did the photoshop, I was checking to see whos beard it was, and it turned out to be doctor Daniel Dennett's, and the image was on the Richard Dawkins site, on the "Battle of the New Atheism" page. Just coinsidence, if you believe in that sort of thing.

Congrats! Couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy.

His blog lead to this forum, where I'm enjoying some heated debates of the type that I have not had since the MPAA was cruel enough to shut down my previous web haunt, http://torrentspy.com.

Or two? I'm tired of saving the world from the evils of nuclear power.

Evils of nuclear power? Hrm.

I think the biggest problem with nuclear power is that everyone is afraid to build the new reactors that are 99% efficient and run off nuclear waste from older reactors.

They know that if they even think about it they'll have a hundred people with picket signs at their front door.

That was tongue-in-cheek, Vegan. I work in the nuclear power industry.

it must be fun building all those tiny little wind turbines, that use the wind from the radioactive atoms. :D

I always thought it was little hamsters on subatomic hamster wheels attached to a turbine, while the radio was one.

Now THERE's a progressive idea!

Radioactive fallout collectors to generate energy!

We're going to be in a nuclear war some time anyway, might as well make something good out of it. Cheap energy.

Yeaaah!

And you'll need a way to generate electricity anyway, what with all the power plants having been vaporized or taken offline by EMPs.

The BA's old job: President of the JREF

BA Blog: I am leaving the JREF Presidency (http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2009/12/07/i-am-leaving-the-jref-presidency/)

It is with bittersweet feelings that I announce that as of January 1, 2010, I will no longer be President of the James Randi Educational Foundation. [...]

This was a very difficult decision for me. But Iím leaving the Presidency so I can concentrate on some future TV projects Iíve been developing. This has been a dream of mine for more than a decade, and something Iíve worked on very hard, so itís an opportunity I simply could not pass up.

I can't wait for that future to arrive. But I must.

Oh dear. I hesitate to opine that The BA's campaign of advancement through sycophancy was all a bit of a waste of time, then.
Hey ho, follo' the dollar

I'm feeling just a bit uncomfortable after reading. I was only miffed the BA had such a short tenure in the job. All the best to him.
