why do the ` index cubes ` in photos of lunar samples have letters on them

i understand why they are there - as an accurate 3D reference of size , but why is each face lettered

north south east west top and bottom

It is the orientation of the meteorite as found and used when the photos are first taken in the field then carried on in future photos.

It wasn't a dumb question.

Aaah, you see I was being particularly dumb and forgetting to check them. NSEWTB is pretty obvious and easy to clear up. I though you meant that the letters were YRSAPE, of which only S and E make sense...
