View Full Version : What would be the fate of the matter in the Universe, if the Universe carries on?

What would happen if the Universe just keeps on merrily expanding?

I have read that maybe all that will be left would be a big black hole, or black holes.

I have heard that all matter disintegrates, eventually; is that considered mainstream?

I don't want to know about big crunches etc... I am just interested in what would happen to the matter, planets, neutron stars, etc, given a long enough length of time.

There was the idea, in the LHC thread, about how there might be black holes inside white dwarfs, gradually eating them away, and heating them up at the same time...which was interesting.

Slowly, slowly it all cools down and just simply gets further and further away. Eventually and forever cold dark and very sparse while expanding ever quicker....
Even the big stars and the black holes are doomed to evaporate entirely...eventually...
But in the present time period I can only stress that this cooling and diffusion is thousands of billions of years away from any future I can imagine. The next question that this brings me to is. ( No I do not intend to hijack your thread.) Could there be other universes expanding toward this one?

It is predicted the universe started very small and very hot, the background radiation (currently about 3 degrees above Absolute Zero) is tending towards zero but will it ever get there? Forever is a long time indeed!

So if the Universe just keeps on merrily expanding. It will become cooler and cooler and the receding galaxies will slide off the visible spectrum.

Could there be other universes expanding toward this one? Absolutely not. For if it were coming towards us, it would have to be in our universe, and therefore part of our universe and therefore a part of the whole. Somebody made a wiki page about this:

The Future of an Expanding Universe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_of_an_expanding_universe)

The other pages referenced at the bottom of the article are also useful.
