Ok; this could be bad reporting, or it could be bad PR from Fisher Price / Mattel.

Does doll deliver Islamic message? (http://www.kjrh.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=5c383aca-c3d2-4b3d-b4a5-5a8108ba4971)

People claim they can hear it mumble "Satan is king," and clearly speak "Islam is the light."
Ok; I can understand a garbled sentence being heard as something else. (how many of you played records backwards?)

But; what I don't understand from this story is why nobody is saying what the doll is supposed to be saying.

Even stranger is that the guy is upset because it doesn't disclose the fact that it's an Islaamic doll on the package.

If I heard something satanic everytime I heard mumbling, I'd never go through a drive-thru window again.

Speech perception is highly based on redundancy and expectation.

So, while it wouldn't be called "pareilodia" a similar effect certainly exists.

Just look at what happens in things like "EVP" where noise modulation is "evaluated" as speech, based mostly on power envelopes.

In doing speech recognition, mixing, etc, this happens often enough to be understood to be simply matter of course.

They aren't saying because it is supposed to be just baby babble.

You're jealous because the Voices talk to me.

But enough of that. Mondegreens (http://www.snopes.com/holidays/christmas/humor/mondegreens.asp) -- Christmas-carol ones, but you get the idea.

I can't tell what it's saying. Here are a couple of Youtubes about it:

Once, I was the last person in the house awake. I walked by my brothers' room and one of them sighed in his sleep in a way that sounded like somebody had said "Angel". Scared me half to death, that did.

Oh I certniatnly belive in auditory pareilodia. The mind, in my opinion, interprets sounds even more losely than it does visual ques. And the worse the ability to hear, the more the mind tries to compensate.

I'm about 60% deaf in my left ear. I can't tell you how many times I've been in bed, laying on my right side (effectively deafining my good ear), when I swear that I hear a voice. I don't know what it says. I don't know where it comes from. But by god, it's a voice. It's scarey as hell.

Then I sit up and listen, and it's some mundane sound that's obviously not a voice.

I actually have a suspense supernatural thriller I've penned the outline to that's based on this (not that I think I'm original, it's been done before).

Here is something to add... once while I was spending the night at my grandmother's house, I heard a tussle outside the bedroom window, some growling, and scratching. Next, I heard wicked cat screeches and I swear on my life the cat started screaming, "helllllp me, hellllp me." Then more scratching and tussleling, next morning the cat was found dead in the flower bed. Still scares me to think about it.

Freakishly weird.

Ya just gotta love religion. It's so beneficial to humanity, ensuring us universal peace, unity and safety. ;)

That just makes no sense at all. I thought Muslims despised the devil, not thought of him as king.

That's all I have to say about that, so I'll just say that someone has way too much time on their hands. Someone needs to spend less time looking for messages that aren't there and spend more time doing soething constructive, like helping their fellow man. Yeesh.

"Islam is the light"

Whether the doll says it or not, that is true. At the moment, I am staying very close to the Sheikh Zayed mosque (http://lukman3k.googlepages.com/sheikh_zayed_grand_mosque_01.jpg)in Abu Dhabi (3rd largest mosque in the world...), and the way that one is lit at night...yes, I can assure you: Islam is the light. ;)

(no religious intent whatsoever)

But hey, it's close to 2 in the night here and I do 14h work days 7 days a week at terrible hours, so I'm off to bed right now.

Why limit the choice to just one?

Somehow I'm reminded of the people said to have tried to get their copy of The Sims (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sims) refunded because they though they had gotten a spanish language version by mistake, not realizing that the Sims babble in the same nonsense language (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sims#Simlish_language) in all versions.

And of the language identification of the killer in The murders in the Rue Morgue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Murders_in_the_Rue_Morgue)
