I'm glad he's at your house, Phil. You can go "face to face" with him better than most. My wife would expect a new shower curtain if he comes to our house. :)

Was Lenin that tall? He looks more intimidating that high up on your curtain. :)

Just make sure Senator McCarthy doesn't find out about this.

in regards to our esteemed Mr. Plait's erm... 'vision', I have a two to shave of my own. Both of them strangely enough are of the face of Jesus on the Shroud of Turin (which we all know now to be a very nice foregery).

The first occurred when I was about ten. We lived in a two family house, my parents living upstairs, my grandparents living on the ground floor. I had a swingset in the back. One summer i happened to notice something strange: if I was swinging on the swing and looked at the screen window of my (very religious) grandparents' window, the screen on the outside would instantly resolve itself into the face of Jesus. But only, only when the swing was at the point in the arc where it was almost parallel to the ground. (and only on sunny days). Of ocurse now I look back at that and laugh it off as a trick of the light, but I was terrified back then. I had a terrible time that summer making up excuses why I suddenly no longer wanted to ride the very expensive swing set my parents had bought me.

The second occurance was about a decade ago, and it's on film. If you see (rent or purchase) National Geographic's Mysteries Underground (an excellent show in its own right), there is a point in the show where as a bunch of cavers are walking through Lechuguilia Cave there is the face of Jesus on the wall above them. This face is probably about 20 feet tall and is formed by the depostion of calcite frosting on the walls along with some fortuitous rock formations. To be honest , this did creep me out he first couple of times I saw it, but now I delight in tellilng people who have never seen the show to stop the tape when they see the face. Few people get it on their first try, but everyone agrees that it's overwhelming once it's pointed out.

Anyway, I'm getting tired of having the son of god pop up surrepticously. I'll trade soemone a Jesus for an Elvis... but only the early Elvis, when he was really good :D

Phil,

That was a hilarious (and educational) bit of writing. Its been said that our brains are hardwired to recognize faces, so we sometimes see them in things. Julian Jaynes used a term for when we take a further step and attribute great significance or a message in recognizing a face or vision, "spontaneous divination."

Anyway, that image really looked like V. Lenin, even before I read further and discovered your pasted in image for comparison.

In my master bathroom the vinyl flooring was about 20 years old (until a year ago. I have replaced it with ceramic tiles now).

on that old vinyl floor I swear I have seen the faces of Chingis Khan, a magician with a top hat and a goatee, a Sardar with turban, old woman's wrinkled face, Carl Marx and many other faces.

No Lenin or Jesus on that floor.

Sure enough, stare at some randon patterns, such as a floor carpet, or textured ceiling or textured wall and you are bound to see faces.

It's amazing that some people make a big deal out of it. I would think that if God prefers to show up he/she would do better then showing up in a bathroom shower curtain or bathroom vinyl floor.
