How much damage could last Saturdays asteroid inflict on us, if it hit land?

I think you'll get more of a response in Q&A

See Q&A topic Near Miss (http://www.bautforum.com/space-astronomy-questions-answers/85487-near-miss.html).

See the Earth Impact Effects Program (http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/impacteffects/) output there. Make your own assumptions and use it to get your own answers.

It's been discussed a bit in another thread. See this post, for instance, for a worst case calculation:

depends. If it was mostly rock you are talking about the equivalent of a 1.5-2 megaton bomb detonated in the air. It would most likely break up shortly after entering the atmosphere. Great light show but no real devastation.

If it was made up of mostly iron then it would be 3+ megaton ground impact Expect a crater of about 1km across and 250m deep if in material like shale/limestone. Total energy release would be over 9 megatons.

Pretty bad if you are in the local area but not much different then the nuclear bomb test America performed on a regular basis.
