Thanks for posting the link.

If I read the image correctly, there is a region not far (relatively speaking, its over a couple of hundred kilometers) from the south pole that is almost 0 degrees C right now. At least in the daytime, but it gets pretty frosty at night, -120 degrees C.

Scientists now have the ability to contrast day/night Mars imagery to bring to light the red planet as never before.

NASA’s Mars Odyssey spacecraft has been orbiting that distant planet since October 2001. Among a set of onboard instruments is the Thermal Emission Imaging System—or THEMIS for short. This special multi-wavelength camera has 5 visual bands and 10 infrared bands. Its main tasks are mapping rock makeup and detecting heat, which yields information on the physical and thermal properties of the martian surface.

After years of flying above Mars, Odyssey’s THEMIS is providing researchers a daytime/nighttime look at that globe—with surprises likely in the offing.

This ability could well lead to spotting hot spots—Yellowstone-like locales on Mars. Toss in a splash of subsurface water and you may have cozy cubbyholes for microbial life.

the unopened secrets of mars will come out since there are vast efforts in our world is going on, even Dr. Stephen Hawking were also said (I have read information which was on mars). Dr. Stephen Hawking further said in that news that mars may become a prospective planet for the "settlement of life thereon", they said that earth is facing lot of problems today, globalwarming and other effects are coming with the earth. That was a interesting article in the newspaper. ultimately mars is a supplementary station to start the life thereon.

Being able to see Mars with so much precision, even when it is night on the surface, will help greatly in the exploration of the surface in search of water, in whatever form it might be found, as well as other minerals. It should also help in the decision making process about where to land the next missions to Mars, especially the first man crew mission to the Red Planet.

Interesting. These images have 18 meter resolution, so they are not nearly what we expect to see when it finally settle into the mission orbit. Still, there is some great stuff here. Thanks Blob for posting the links.

Interesting. These images have 18 meter resolution, so they are not nearly what we expect to see when it finally settle into the mission orbit. Still, there is some great stuff here. Thanks Blob for posting the links.
Are you thinking of the newer MRO, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/MRO/main/) finally settling in? Are you referring to 18-meter images of the older 2001 Mars Odyssey (http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/odyssey/index.html)?

The Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) aboard NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter marked a milestone May 4. An image from THEMIS showing Martian lava flows and wind streaks mingling with impact craters, became the 1,200th “Image of the Day” posted online at themis.asu.edu/latest.html.
