Magnificent Desolation

Over at BBC Online News, a chap by the name of Chris Horrie has written this VERY "must read" essay about conspiracy theory and -theorists.

A quote:

"Then there is the persistent campaign to convince everyone that the moon landing was faked in a TV studio and on location in an Arizona desert in order to boost the popularity of Richard Nixon."

... and another quote:

"In the 1930s the controversial German psychologist Wilhelm Reich diagnosed belief in conspiracy theories as a form of mass hysteria and as a type of contagious "emotional plague". "

Magnificent Desolation:

I think you gave a very bad example by citing Wilhelm Reich to your anti-conspiracist outlook on life, as Reich later turned out to be a conspiracist himself!

Enlightenment comes too late for some.

I took a peek at your BBC link and found that I actually agreed with most of the content put forward by the conspiracists.
Aliens/JFK/High Cabal and to some extent Sept 11th. Not because of "whatever anybody in authority says, the exact opposite is almost certainly the truth", but because history has occassionally 'let slip' the 'exact opposite' as fact.
Winston Churchill WWII - The High Cabal.

Actually I visit http://www.rense.com (and http://www.dailygrail.com) on a daily basis ! (And just for the record: I think that Sherman Skolnick is a complete nutcase !)

I do believe in one conspiracy however:

The murder on John F. Kennedy

(But I do NOT agree that Jackie - or George Hickey - did it ! /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif ...)

Generally I donīt believe in conspiracies, because they have little or no evidence to support them. JFK is different though, because it HAS evidence to support it.

I strongly recommend this essay by Rex Bradford:

http://history-matters.com/essays/jfkgen/LastingQuestions/Lasting_Questions.htm

I agree with every single word, Rex writes. (And he writes even better than Mike Griffith, who otherwise is my favorite) In fact, that Rex Bradford essay could have been written by me.

Remember, Slime ! Trust no one ! Even Oliver Stone could be working for the CIA to discredit the conspiracy side .... (Wasnīt Olī Oliver a rightwinger to begin with, but then he claims that he swung over ? Hmm ! Makes you think, doesnīt it ?)

I kind of agree with the JFK thing too. I think there is some evidence of a conspiracy and that Oswald was definitely NOT a lone gunman.

However, I DO think that the JFK conspiracy case has gotten completely out of hand. One of my best friends is a nut about this topic, and he's shown me stuff that makes me shake my head. They seem to think that just about everyone watching the motorcade had something to do with it, not to mention just about every organization with even a hint of shadiness or secretiveness to it. (The Roswell incident is another runaway case of this same ilk.)

I'm sure there was a conspiracy, but that it was just a small thing among a handful of people. But I also believe we will probably never really know for sure.

I don't think the moon hoax has gotten that bad yet. Thank goodness. But I don't see quite the same emotional reaction here that the others have, so maybe it never will reach that point. (Knock on wood)
