The MESSENGER spacecraft went into safe mode just before its closest approach of Mercury on Sept. 29. Although the instruments were taking data as the spacecraft came near the planet during this third flyby of the mission, after going into safe mode, no further data or pictures were obtained. This means the expected [...]

What didn't *they* want us to see do you suppose?

The approach viewed never before seen parts of of Mercury. We caught that on Camera. The departure viewed things we've already seen.

Ah, but the safing occurred prior to closest approach, so there will be less detail.

It is too bad we lost science return; but hopefully once Messenger settles into orbit the losses will be trivial.

Ten minutes after entering eclipse and four minutes prior to the closet approach point, the carrier signal from the spacecraft was lost, earlier than expected.

mmmm...

We may never know why.

The usual suspects have already surfaced: Cosmic rays and a power 'glitch'. I get to wonder whether the sudden absence of the the solar wind led to an expected discharge - the probe is designed to prevent that, but it is also designed not to pull too much current when positioning cameras and such. We should have good doppler right up to the last transmission, and good doppler on the trajectory afterword. The first two flyby gravitational assists netted screwy results. Is the gravitational assist equal to what was expected?

Maybe they saw <CT link removed> and had to stop the cameras, wash and rinse, before showing the other side of Merc?

Searching for reality amidst illusion, or the other way around? One wonders...

Because it's polite to tell people where a link might take them:

That's: YouTube video, "NASA Lies - Alien Life The Moon Base", about 10 minutes.

Pure conspiracy babbling. Don't bother.

nutant gene 71 please do not post copyrighted images here. And do not link to CT videos outside of the CT forum.

Sorry at my attempt at space humor, obviously in bad taste.

Tinaa, thanks for 'copyright' reminder. Noted.
