Okay, so this may not be important breaking news about astronomy, but it may answer a burning question posed by most people who have watched* or read "2001: A Space Odyssey": that is, why does the computer HAL-9000 sing the song 'Daisy Bell' as the astronaut Dave Bowman takes him apart? I always thought it was related to the Altair, the world's first microcomputer kit for home use. There was a popular program for the Altair that would play Daisy (after you toggled it in to the front panel) on an AM radio set next to the computer.

Other way around.

2001: A Space Odyssey from 1968 (book or movie)

Altair 8800 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altair_8800): from 1975.

iirc, it was because that was one of the songs HAL was taught when they were preparing it has an AI.

Of course, AI seems to be another technology, co-located with fusion, at the end of the rainbow that doesn't have the pot of gold.

I guess I must not have seen 2001 by 1975.

HAL was probably into Death Metal and Daisy was all he could remember. The slot for Nathan Explosion was already pulled.
