Figures. I am on travel right now and have a slow connection. I still feel like I own that ring, and here I am, not able to see the image. Grrr.

It's been on its way for 160,000 years. You should be able to handle waiting a little longer. ;)

Astronomers detected the first "hot spot" in 1996, but now they see dozens of them all around the ring. The temperature of the flares surges from a few thousand degrees to a million degrees Fahrenheit. Individual hot spots cannot be seen from ground-based telescopes. Only Hubble can resolve them.

Gorgeous and informative picture.

This is the telescope NASA's getting ready to throw away. A while back NASA said they couldn't do a Hubble servicing mission because they'd have to have a second shuttle ready as a rescue backup. In the last few days NASA announced that shuttle missions will have a second shuttle ready as a rescue backup. They also said they still plan to throw away Hubble.

Marcellus - Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

Only Hubble can resolve them?

Why?

If it's just optical resolution, then there should be ground-based telescopes with high enough resolution, e.g. the new adaptive-optical ones, to resolve this. Or does this pic include information from outside the visual wavelengths?
